It was possibly some kind of insulation for the pitch. That’s what I’m guessing. There was no undersoil heating back then and winters were frostier and snowier, with this game taking place on the 8th of December. Maybe with straw on the pitch and covers on the top, it offered some level of protection. I admit, I don’t know this, it’s only a guess. But it seems reasonable.
