But you cannot pump oil reserve into your car. You need refining facilities to convert crude to gasoline. Refining facilities take years to build. In peacetime, US is energy self sufficient. But with the strategic petroleum reserve depleted to a historic low, many experts are predicting that it would be difficult to sustain a major war.

And if I'm not mistaken, as a not insignificant bonus, what we get out of oil shale is a fair bit easier to refine than other oil. That gives a lot of leeway and options on the global market, and presumably domestic refineries that are cheaper and quicker to establish. I'm no prophet, but the fundamentals of our future look pretty bright. As in anything else in life, shit can happen though, at any moment.

There are at present practically no spare refining capacity anywhere in the world. At the moment, US is busy sucking up to Israel, thus alienating the Middle East while Russia and China are building bridges with the Arab nations. Foreign holding of US treasury bonds is on a rapid decline. USD is losing its premier position as global reserve currency at an unprecedented rate. National debt is spiralling out of control. Reunification doesn't necessarily mean boating a million chinese across the Taiwan straight at a coast line lined with anti aircraft and anti ship missiles defended by a 200k man army who have 400+ aircraft. They won't try to invade unless they can destabilize the government in Taiwan first, otherwise it will be a blood bath for them. Also thier plan as mentioned above is reunification, not extermination. Leveling Taiwan isn't really an option for them because it goes against their end goals. I'd expect things like economic warfare and even blockades to put pressure on the Taiwan government and economy. If they can divide the people to a point they won't be resisted by an organized defense then they may try something militarily. Yeah Xi is a dictator but that doesn't give him the magical ability to teleport a million troops and tanks across the Taiwan straight.
