It would be suicidal for US to fight a military war with China today. 1. US strategic oil reserve is at about 371 million barrels, down from a high of about 600 and OPEC is cutting production. 2. China has just imposed a rare earth export ban to US, a key ingredient to military equipments. It would take years for US to ramp up its domestic production to meet its needs. 3. The war in Ukraine has depleted its ammunition stockpile to an already alarming level. Its manufacturing capacity would be unable to keep up with another war. 4. Already some of US European allies are questioning the on-going support of the Ukraine war. It is highly unlikely that they would line up behind another war that is thousands of miles away.

Also... though you may not understand how global reserve currency works, debt is the fundamental core upon which it hinges and works, so long as the currency issuers (the US in this case) has the economy of scale coupled with the military might to enforce its edicts (which we do). The ONLY reason China was lifted out of is previous poverty and relative econmic isolation was because the US paved the way and maintained the integrity thereof of global free trade, enforced by our unprecedented naval might. Without US intervention, China would still be a bucolic and backward state, struggling to keep its population fed, with weak borders and strong predators on every doorstep, as it was when we found it.

But you cannot pump oil reserve into your car. You need refining facilities to convert crude to gasoline. Refining facilities take years to build. In peacetime, US is energy self sufficient. But with the strategic petroleum reserve depleted to a historic low, many experts are predicting that it would be difficult to sustain a major war.

@gj8550 this is why we've trade partner countries that do the various refining. There's been much talk of domestic refining, though it always comes down to the roi factor. And if I'm not mistaken, as a not insignificant bonus, what we get out of oil shale is a fair bit easier to refine than other oil. That gives a lot of leeway and options on the global market, and presumably domestic refineries that are cheaper and quicker to establish. I'm no prophet, but the fundamentals of our future look pretty bright. As in anything else in life, shit can happen though, at any moment.

There are at present practically no spare refining capacity anywhere in the world. The next major world would likely be WWIII with US and G7 on the one side against Russia, China, Iran, N Korea and a few other middle Eastern countries. Guess where the oil refineries are. At the moment, US is busy sucking up to Israel, thus alienating the Middle East while Russia and China are building bridges with the Arab nations. Foreign holding of US treasury bonds is on a rapid decline. USD is losing its premier position as global reserve currency at an unprecedented rate. National debt is spiralling out of control. Economists are predicting that interest payments on the national debt would surpass other government spendings before this decade ends. Where’s the bright light in the future?
