This is one of the most compelling episodes of Change Agents. The journalist paints a vivid picture by focusing on specific people's experiences. Great stuff.

Been listening to the BBC for many years. They have been reporting on the piracy occurring in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia. Seen old films and videos of pirates having firefights with the security officers on the ships. Thanks for posting this interview, goes along with what's been reported,

My cousins were between Florida and Bermuda and had a skiff with three or four guys on it come up on them a hundred miles offshore with no rods or anything. They followed them about a thousand yards off there side until they managed to cut in front of them. They never got within five hundred yards but they dropped a prop foul (rope that floats or self floats) across their path. Cuz stopped and turned around and averted contact but the other boat only stopped approaching them when cuz and company presented weapons. Mariner 12ga is identifiable from quite a distance. Stay safe brothers

That sounds like a really intense and scary situation. I'm glad your cousins were able to stay safe.

Check out fruit company Dole and their Pineapple cups. Yes grown locally but then its shipped by sea to 2 other countries for processing then shipped back to the US. Learn to read the fine print on everything. I was just shocked to learn that all flavors of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing contain bio engineered ingredients. Every bottle of Ranch whether it be buttermilk to bacon of every size had it on the fine print of their labels in a local HEB store here in Texas

I did a couple of EOD tours in the Falklands during my time in service and have some very good friends there. During the squid season some of them get work on the jiggers as it pays very well. They are always carrying multiple knives on them (the Falklands has the same firearms policy as the UK, so guns are not going to happen), the knives aren’t for processing the squid, but for self defence. It is not uncommon for the foreign workers on jiggers to quite literally be thrown overboard if they become injured or sick whilst out fishing and you can imagine how long you’re going to last in winter in the South Atlantic. I’m actually surprised some of them take the bodies of those that have died to Montevideo for repatriation, if they did this in Stanley (capital of the Falklands) then I can guarantee they’d lose their annual fishing licence and unlikely be granted another in future years. When I was last there over 20yrs ago a seasonal licence was about £1.5M and as such it’s the biggest independent source of income for the Falkland Islands.

Thank you so much for this interview and new window into another underreported topic. My heart goes out to the slaves on the Chinese fishing vessels, and to all the commercial vessels just trying to do their jobs of transporting goods - which is a key service to the world. It's outrageous that this is allowed to the degree it is. Train those merchant marine sailors! Arm those ships! This sounds worse than the American Wild West.

What a shame, they should board/check any commercial vessel within 200 miles of the US to make sure they don’t have slaves. That’s a bunch of crap that this is happening in 2024. I worked in seafood for a bit when I was younger & we sold (wholesale) almost exclusively US/MEX caught seafood. We shipped domestically & to Japan, Korea, etc. Some fish came from Australia, Portugal, Scotland, etc…but only as a novelty item. I assume that when Americans buy Chinese caught seafood, it’s frozen supermarket stuff. In CA we supply our own tuna, squid, urchin & lobster, striped bass, red drum. Probably many other species as well.

It's truly disheartening to hear about these unethical practices in the seafood industry. Awareness and advocacy are key to bringing about change.

@@mwwwww648 Well they changed their magazine cover picture of Donald Trump at the last minute for the assassination attempt story because the editor said the picture of him pumping his fist, blood running down his face, american flag in the background, and secret service attempting to rush him away made him "look too good", even though it was said, by even his detractors to be the most iconic photo yet of the 21st century. They replaced it with a photo of the empty littered rally site.

Your intro draws me in,that's my belief and how I roll, but I've also seen U advocate for the IDF and Israel.Dont get me wrong many of my idols are Jewish,Zionism and Judaism are not the same thing. respect all cultures and personal choice in life but to be strong and to rise and help build a better future you HAVE TO recognise and be aware of facts and history.Never tow the line, carve out your own way and stand tall ,held up by righteousness and truth. If it's right then people recognise it,you can't build a solid foundation on racist ideology propaganda, lies and greed.
