Betty has lived with PTSD for 70 years since surviving the Holocaust. After liberation, Betty screamed every night while dreaming that she was back in Auschwitz. Although she has endured extreme tragedy, Betty still believes there are good people in the world. Today she is a proud great-grandmother and hopes others will understand that inside we are all human.

In Germany we have field trips in school to the concentration camps to make us grasp what happened and that that can never happen again by all means. It's already as bad as it is to hear the stories and see the videos and pictures in class but physically being there is a whole other level.

If you are interested in the stories there's an organization called "Yad vashem" (which literally means "hand and name") that took it upon themselves to curate everything holocaust related. There's a really interesting museum in Israel and also videos on KZbin with people telling their stories. I'm from Israel, and I was lucky enough to record a story of a Holocost survivor first hand (and meet the amazing person that was Miriam whom I miss dearly).

There are a ton of Holocaust survivor documentaries here on YT! I’ve watched hours of them and their stories will stay with me forever. I’m so glad they have the strength to tell their stories. The things they endured are absolutely horrendous. It’s so important to keep their stories alive.

My grandmother was taught never to talk about her heritage or her family's Jewishness. My dad and I didn't even know that we were Jewish until my grandma took a DNA test and found out she was 100% Ashkenazi. As far as I understand my ancestors fled to the US around the late 1800s/early 1900s during the rise in pogroms against Jews in Russia and Europe. And it's lucky they did, otherwise I may never have been born! I promise never to stay silent, never to be quiet about what we Jews have endured. I will do everything within my power to make sure this doesn't happen again, Betty! I'm only one person but I'll do my part!

I'm German. I'm young. Even my mother wasn't close to existing at the time the Nazis committed their atrocities, yet I still feel shame for what horrors my people put other innocent people through, based on their twisted ideology. In the past, my country has been responsible for unspeakable evils. It disgusts me that there's still people, even in this very country, saying the Holocaust and other crimes committed by Nazi Germany didn't take place. How anyone can hear of a story like this, let alone watch it, and still believe the woman is lying or spreading false information is beyond me.

As a Jewish child in a Jewish school, every annual Holocaust month we would host Holocaust survivors who would come and share their stories with us. It was my favorite time of year and these stories always gripped me and tore my heart open. They were incredible people with unquantifiable strength. Thank you for doing a story on this. When I was in college in the late 1970’s, I helped the Red Cross pack up their blood drive items from an event in the auditorium. An older man was boxing up items for me to carry outside. He had numbers roughly tattooed on the inside of one forearm. I still recall how Ai felt to be in the presence of someone who had lived...when so many others perished at the hands of other human beings..... I was very abused as a child. I convinced myself to stop laughing. Eventually I found little reasons to be happy for. I don’t laugh like a lot of people do w light humor but the special things that do make me laugh I laugh so genially. It changed my life. Find the little things that make you happy. My heart goes out to this lady and her family. I have read many stories about Auschwitz. I had at least one ancestor My Father told us of one of our relatives who was sent to the gas chambers. In one book I read I saw a man who looked like my Father and was either Jewish or Polish. I know he wasn't Jewish. I found recently through doing Geneology we have Jewish Ancestry. She still appreciates and enjoys all the good things in her life, and she loves her family...but her heart was truly broken by what she went through. Reminds me of a quote in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" that says, “You know, a heart can be broken, but it keeps on beating, just the same.” A lot of us have trauma that is deep and it breaks our hearts forever in one way or another. You move on, live, and love, but there is always a malingering that time cannot rid. My hope is that wherever we go after this life these deep pains will finally be washed away like what Eddie the main character of the book/movie "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" experienced: " "He felt no pain from his death. All he felt was lightness and calm, as if every hurt he had ever suffered had been washed away."

Man, hearing Betty share her story definitely was a tear jerker. I can’t imagine anyone watching this with dry eyes. I can’t begin to imagine what she went through. I’m sure she only gave a tiny fraction of her story and the PG rated version. Just heartbreaking, there’s no other way to say it. Back when I was in high school, I took a class trip to the museum of tolerance. The tour guides there were all Holocaust survivors. Being there listening to them was so surreal. Watching Betty’s interview was very much similar.

Night terrors are so awful. Im on medication that makes me forget my dreams 90% of the time. I still wake up soaked in sweat a lot, but luckily the images are gone when I wake up. Ptsd is difficult. This woman is so strong. ❤
