Just a fun fact, "merah" in the scientific name just means "red" in Malay and the common name is sometimes "red rasbora". Incidentally the word "boraras" is just the word "rasbora" rearranged, just to make new name for the newly-discovered genus. It actually has to do with the number of bones in the fins, which are swapped between the two genus. You can tell them apart from b. brigittae and b. maculatus, by looking at the spots and patterns Merah has a translucent body with the red stripe down the side with the black oval Brigittae have a long black smear or stripe, almost like a racing stripe Maculatus have an almost perfect black circle I have the maculatus personally but they are all lovely fish I think

Hi. I have a couple of nano tanks but my favourite is a 60ltr with 30 or more of these. Heavily planted and an exploding population of red cherry shrimp. They display amazing colour and schooling behaviour and have a voracious appetite. It’s been set up around a year. I first got 15 but added about 20 more a few months later. Doubling the population was the right decision. Of interest they share the tank with my super chill double red apisto. He’s so lazy I practically have to hand feed him so there’s no threat at all. These guys go nuts for mosquito larvae. I live in a tropical region so no shortage of mozzies! Just a mesmerising tank to watch.

Excellently ... youll get a lot of bang for your buck on that combo too... one likes the bottom waters, the other likes the top and surface. You could even add 2 or 3 of the beautiful clown killifish (aka rocket killi) they sit at the surface pretty much exclusively. And all those species need a group of 3 or more... but in a planted tank the bioload could handle 15 to 20 of those fish honestly.They all produce a very small amount of ammonia

Do you find internal parasites/worms a problem with these micro rasboras? I have had quite a few die due to “wasting disease”. I did manage to expel some worms with praziquantel.
@Fishtory4 жыл бұрын
The celestial pearls get wasting disease easily...and the erythromicron population has some very bad parasite or wasting issue....when i breed them at home and keep them separate from the adults (adults removed after spawning in an empty tank). They never ever have problems (out of spawning maybe 300 over the years). But if they are mixed with wild caught or store bought adults they all end up with it. Ive tried everything i know of, and they still seem to have it. I wonder if its a virus even? Like hepatitis is for humans. Anyhow, i highly recommend learning to spawn some on an extra 5 or 10 gallon aquarium and then keeping those, or buying from a domestic breeder. It'll cost more, but in my mind it's well worth it-since these fish color up so beautifully

Hey, I have 11 of these guys in a heavily planted 9 gallon tank with a shrimp colony. Unfortunately they don't seem that happy, about half of them are pale and the other half are coloured up. They really don't swim around much except for when I feed. My temp is at 24C, my water parameters are good and the ph is around 6.5. Any idea on how I can make these guys happier? Thanks!
@Fishtory3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. First of all, that's awesome that you're watching closely and realize they could be thriving more... sounds like you are a great fishkeeper already. So as far as helping them... They can be a bit fragile, but feeding them live baby Brine shrimp really colors them up, and gets them more active. The other odd thing I've begun to learn about them, is that even though they like the ph lower for spawning...they still like some calcium or TDS/ minerality in their water...so adding about half a cup to a cup of crushed shells or coral per 10 gallons aka 32-64 grams of crushed coral/shells or limestone/ aragonite per 40L This mimics the rain which is nuetral...the jungle debris and leaves, which are acidic and tannic...but then the limestone ground and stones present in most most region...they sort of want a mix of opposite things in the normal sense of things
@plantlover693 жыл бұрын

In a well planted 5.5 with an HOB and weekly water changes of 20% - you can easily house 12 or so of them, and an otocinctlus or nerite snails. You could also do 7 to 9 and 3 or 4 habrosus in theory, but corys just end up a bit happier with room to swim in bursts. However using a ample vegetation and perhaps a stick to break up the water column - you can easily get away with up to 15 nano rasboras

I watch your videos for a few reasons...fairly new to the hobby; really only interested in nano-tanks with my largest tank being 29g tall (which isn't setup yet) and my smallest being 2 2.5g rimless tanks....one is a dedicated shrimp colony, the other is a plant/temp breeder. I also have a community 15g and 10g, 2 5.5 gallons and a new uncycled 10g and 2 bowls...Id like to try a few of these rasboras...but i have discovered my tap water avg between 8.0-8.5. Most of my inhabitants are White Cloud minnows. Is it possible to lower my pH consistanly enough to keep these guys?? Im thinking Walstad for my next planted tank. Is substate the key to getting that low pH? I currently use a combo of sand/gravel....i have a small bag of aquarium soil and black acrylic sand also have seachem red flourite and a few different types of sand. Will any of those keep my pH constantly low enough?
@Fishtory3 жыл бұрын
Well thanks for tuning in Patrick and happy holiday season to you! So you will be able to get your ph down by using leaves or wood with tannins (and that usually gets you down from 8.0 to 7.0 with 3 to 5 large almond leaves or so, per 10 gallons. Then substrate can lower it another .5 or even 1 point sometimes (make sure you are buying ADA Amazonia, or beightwelll aqua soils for shrimp ... fluval stratum works sometimes also, but as much so as the pricey "fortified and active", nitrate infused aquasoils. You can also buy blackwater in a bottle products or ph lowering water conditioners online. Most are simply boric acid. However none of that will lower the TDS /Kh & Gh, so only adding filtered or RODI water can truly drop all those parameters. Some people resort to using the distilled water by the gallon always for 79 cents to $1.29 a gallon at like Walgreen or the grocery store...and only top off the tank with that , and start with pouring like 10 gallons in to dilute the water Best of luck!

60 honestly... but id start with perhaps 24? ...or ease in the tank bioload going 12, 24, 36 and see how all that goes. I haven't mixed them with any barbs other than cherry barbs, but in a decent sized group, I'd guess they would be fine and actually, the barbs and loaches may encourage more of the schooling instead of shoaling behavior. Lol excellent. They'll get to an inch or so and get more colorful...but they are tiiiiny. Hehe have fun!

I believe such markings are to help with recognition and hence schooling behaviour.

Very possible. Thanks

My LFS has a 50 gallon for me, thinking about doing a nano fish only tank, a massive school of these or Chilli's with some Sparkling Gourami.
@Fishtory5 жыл бұрын
Maybe some scarlet badis or clown killies too would take advantage of top and bottom - in an interesting way. Id love to see the results whenever you implement your dream hehehe. I want to do the same thing too! Like 150 rasbora merah , erythromicron and celestial pearl danios in a 75 or something
@tosbaf5 жыл бұрын
How many of them would you put in a 30l planted shrimptank?
@Fishtory5 жыл бұрын
1 a liter easily

Hello, thank you for sharing. Do Phoenix Rasboras take food from the top or bottom or both ? I remember watching a youtube video about a certain rasbora eating only from the middle but I can't remember which one.
@Fishtory4 жыл бұрын
Usually the top, as it falls through upper mid water, however they pick at algae and odd little bits of food scraps for maybe 25% of the diet

@@Fishtory Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated. I'm thinking of getting a school of them for my 3 footer nano-fish tank.

do micro fishes jump? if so, how much? and how can i stop this jumping behaviour?
@Fishtory5 жыл бұрын
They do sometimes, and mainly just when something slams on the floor or theres a loud noise... or if you drop something while working around a tank.... lids are best- i dislike lids aesthetically, so I recommend just keeping the water level an imch or MORE from the top and that stops 99% of it

I run my tanks at too high of a ph for these guys. 50gal shrimp and snail tank. And I'm sure my well water is too hard, liquid rock as my wife calls it.
@Fishtory3 жыл бұрын
So if you can get the ph down, I've learned that some rasboras and danios can do well. They have limestone cliffs and caves in Thailand and Indonesia... which makes that liquid rock...but then the jungle adds so much plant and wood material that the carbonic and nitric acid brings the ph to 6.0 or 6.5 with a tds of 300 or 400 in some cases. I only recently learned this. But it may be worth looking into

you could honestly probably get away with like 70 of these in a 10gallon with some plants
@Fishtory5 жыл бұрын
Probably. Maybe more haha, but i needed to be the voice of reason in case someone brand new to the hobby doesn't understand cycling, feeding and what a heavily planted tank really looks like (this one lol)

How awkward it is when KZbin just recommended me another video right after this, when the youtuber just reposted part of your video footage as his and start explaining on Phoenix too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXa3ZqKmlpeinLM Btw nice explanation and Boraras are great! Can't wait to get some phoenix into my new tank soon!
