A Cajon is a great instrument to make music with friends. But a full size Cajon can be a little bit difficult to travel with. So in this video we show you how we made a mini Cajon that would be great for traveling and to make music at home.

As a drummer, I’m just glad he knew what snares are used for. Great job man, would love to see more percussion related crafts in the future. You have earned yourself a sub!

Very cool! I'm definitely going to make this! Suggestions: 1. Secure both ends of snare to quiet the metallic ringing (spring sound). 2. Don't tighten all screws all the way for the head cover, like a real cajon. This leaves a gap that can be slapped closed and creates a sharp snap sound when hitting the edge. 3. Wonder if a rattle compartment could be encorporated inside. Maybe take the place of the snare?

The one thing I’d suggest is only using 1 snare instead of two, attaching it closer to the top on both sides. You want the snare but not a rattle after & the ability to not have a snare on the bass tone. Can still trim it to size but then maybe use staples to attach to the opposite base side? That way you get a nice deeper clean resonate bass on the middle/bottom and a crisp tenor w/snare on the top.

In Brazil they use tiny Christmas bell on a string. On the snare side

When you asked what else to put on the drum, I've noted a lot of makers seem to like to put LEDs in everything LOL... 😆🤣 Just kidding, but someone might take that seriously and we'll have drums with sound activated LEDs and patterns of LEDs for the drummer to follow, and then suddenly my joke becomes a million dollar idea... and then I'm kicking myself, in rhythm to the blinking LED LOL

@@karenmiller6088 Thanks... initially it was to make a joke about makers adding gratuitous LEDS on projects for no useful purpose other than for "bling", but as I wrote out a couple of ideas using them, I realized, why not? It would make it fun! Okay, let's see if he makes the drums with an add-on LED option in his next video.

LOL, that would be a great idea, I will think about it but I am not sure exactly how it would work at the moment. But I do love it!

@@SpecificLove7 Well, maybe it's no big deal for me, I work with electronics and programming for a living... but here's an outline how I'd make this work: I'd use a 5V LED strip that wraps around the drum. I'd use individually controlled RGB LEDs, Pick a color like red or green, yellow, etc... that blink at a rate determined by a control knob (potentiometer, I'd use a 50K ohm with an on/off switch), and the LED would also turn on when sensing a vibration by using a piezo disk, these are frequently used to detect vibration, and an Arduino would be used to control all the LED operations. You'll need a 5V battery pack (an USB rechargeable battery bank)... Make a strap for the drum, and you can mount the battery pack with Velcro (or zip tie) use a standard USB plug that follows the strap down to the drum where it goes inside a small plastic project box (or 3D print) that houses the knob and the Tiny Arduino... and there's no way I can describe the rest of this in a comment, if you want to make this thing. please go to my channel, you'll find my email in the "ABOUT" send me an email and we can chat, I can help you from there...

A Cajon is a way for people to have drum beats without spending the money on a drum set. And of course they can be great for kids.

A great project for someone to get into wood working. If developed and personalized could be a great item to sell to parents at craft fairs. I know I'm going to give it a whirl, and a flam. 🙃

I’m not sure the snare has to have both sides attached, or if there’s anything wrong with having two half snares. In my experience, the more of the wire in tight contact with the head, the more overtones you’ll hopefully bring out of that head. That said, this is wood, and I don’t think you’re going to get a LOT of overtones, but some part of the snare, probably the loose side, needs to have enough pressure against the head to stop the snares from ringing free in the air - you don’t want that. I’ve seen some that have some kind of set screw or a dowel you can turn and then tighten that tension the snares against the head. coming in at a lower angle will let you do that and also have lots of snare contacting the surface. A lot of cajons also use some kind of string - gut, guitar string, strong nylon, etc. Some have actual guitar tuners you can use to put enough tension in the wire to make it snappy.

Great work! My only feedback is that instead of cutting the snares in half, you could have reduced the length at the end somehow. A full snare may have sounded more rounded-off. Nevertheless, it was fun watching you build this!👌

Loved the video! Suggestion: perhaps tapering the sound hole so it's larger on the inside may allow for the sound to be more easily projected. Not sure....but it might. Great job ...very entertaining 👍
