Hope you’re having a good experience like I am. I accidentally got a pair, Rooster/hen. Compared to the chickens down the road that my neighbors have, my rooster is the best! He has a very soft crow, and he’s very sweet and docile. He adores his girlfriend and I’m sure she’s going to go broody for me. Now I want a couple of more hens! 😂 chicken math! Well, I’m very attached to the two I have, I’m sorry to say the babies will be dinner.😢

Great video! I live in western Wa and have had a mixed flock of Easter eggers, rhode island red, barred rocks, leghorns, wyandottes, bantams, etc and I have to say….they’re my favorites. They are easily the most comfortable through the cold months, don’t get nearly as sassy when they go broody, short molting etc. last year we butchered a roo and it was the first “dual purpose” bird I’ve had that I actually thought had a justifiable amount of meat to actually raise more! Because of this I’m completely selling off my flock and Soley raising them from here on out! I hate buying meat chicks every year and prefer a bird I can free range during the day and make more of in my own time. They’re fabulous for our area, I don’t know why they aren’t more popular.

Absolutely agree! I think we will always keep Speckled Sussex in our flock. My only “complaint” is their eggs a little smaller than our Easter Eggers.
@chelsea_1961
@chelsea_1961 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for confirming they have the meat to keep as meat birds while free range. I’ve got some assorted laying hens like you mentioned, but I want these for meat and I’m definitely buying two more hens. It’s just me so I don’t need that many chicks. I just need some genetic diversity to get me through several generations before having to buy another rooster. I love that my rooster has a very weak crow and is docile. For that reason alone, I’m in love with this breed of chicken!

Thanks for the video! This is my favorite breed! I have had Jersey Giants, Black Australorp's, Buff's, barred rock, Rhode Island reds, Silkies and a variety of mixes. The Speckled Sussex are much more friendly and curious than my Silkies. My larger flock is across a busy country road. The Sussex I had there, would lead the whole large flock across the road stopping traffic whenever they saw me anywhere on the property! Now I keep the speckled Sussex in a coop by the house to prevent this. My hopes is to have these replace the Silkies for brooding. I now have Speckled, Australorp's and Silkies. Also I have never had a problem with the roosters for the Speckled or the Australorp's. I can easily turn my back on them. I also liked the Jersey Giant hens, but the roosters often would swat my kids with their wings.

So would you say almost all the time the speckled Sussex rooster is gentle with the hens and friendly with people? Also Could you please tell me what is the earliest you’d expect him to start mounting the hens? I have the option to get a 13 week old rooster but my 21 week old Cornish Cross hens are still healing from their wounds from the previous rooster and need time to heal before there’s any mounting.

@@tylerhmiel6417 well, the people I'd listened to up to that point had all basically said, "make sure they have a heat source, food, and water and they pretty much take care of themselves". What I'm basically saying is that I didn't realize I had to show them how to get food, so 1 died as a result of transit, 4 died from starvation, 1 of the last two developed a respiratory issue at almost 6 weeks and died within 10 hours, and the last one - literally, she was the last living bird from that flock - got killed by one of my dogs the day after her last friend died. It was a rough spring. But I started all over again and now have 7 happy, healthy hens and a happy, healthy rooster.

I started my backyard flock last year with a BCM, Rhode Island Red, barred rock and had ordered a speckled Sussex, but when I picked them up from the feeder supply, the SS had been eaten by their cat, so I ended up with an Easter egger. My EE is my favorite. This spring I got 4 more chicks - welsummer, double-laced barnevelder, red star sexlink, and a speckled Sussex. Long story short, I got my SS but it was obvious after two weeks that she is a he. He’s the cutest thing and I live in city limits so I’m hoping I get to keep him, but we’ll see. At the end of July, I’m going to get 4 more chicks and will once again request and hope for a female SS - fingers crossed 🤞🏼!!

My SS rooster can barely crow, even after two months of thinking he’s the big man around here. My bed is 50 feet away from his run and I can’t hear him.😂 if I had him in Houston the bus that goes by every 15 minutes is 10 times louder than my rooster crowing. I hope you have the same luck with your rooster. They are extremely good birds.

I acquired a speckled sussex by accident last year, when I bought what was supposed to be two welsummers. As chicks these two breeds are nearly identical but with different leg colors. They were the last two at the store, and were a couple weeks old so i bought them at a discounted price. They were both quite flighty. Any time the welsummer was frightened the sussex would react with her and they would both get so worked up! At around nine months old the wellsummer broke her neck spooking at something, jumping straight up into the bottom of the roost. Th sussex has since gone from reacting like a crazy nutcase every time the welsummer would spook (which was often!!) to being overly friendly with people, and more confident. She really is a great bird now. I don't particularly miss that particular welsummer, but I do want to try that breed again with more birds to see if we got a fluke weirdo with a reactive personality. I will definitely have more sussex in the future! She is beautiful and is one of my favorite birds, with such silky smooth feathers. She lets us stroke her shoulders and sits on our laps now.

AGREED: My Welsummer is (unfortunately) aptly named “Heather Chandler”- she’s an absolute B*TCH! She was a cute, sweet & docile chick/pullet. She got along with her “chickmates” & enjoyed my company as well-she would often fly up to sit on my arm & allow me to pet her… But as soon as she started laying, her personality changed-she turned into an insufferable a$shole! She chases/bullies/generally makes life unhappy for my sweet & timid Cream-Crested Legbar (Veronica Sawyer)…all of my attempts/techniques to modify Hearher’s behavior have been wildly unsuccessful, so in December, I ordered three chicks: breeds known for being friendly/docile (Speckled Sussex, Dominique & Light Brahma) who I REALLY hope will provide friendship and comfort for poor Veronica & help balance/eliminate Heather’s mean girl mentality! 🤞🏽 My baby girls arrived a few weeks ago & all three really do seem to be remarkably sweet & friendly…I hope my plan works!

I accidentally got a pair of speckled Sussex that were marked wrong at Tractor Supply. According to staff they don’t carry them and it was a mistake from the hatchery. I thought they were bantam Marans so I separated them from the rest of my flock. But now they have grown full-size. I love the rooster because he can’t crow worth a damn. At first I thought he was just young and starting out and would develop a bigger crow. It’s been almost 2 months and he still has a hoarse weak crow that doesn’t carry very far at all. I had no idea until watching this video that they were meat birds. That’s perfect for me. Now I want at least a couple more hens to get some genetic diversity in order to cycle them for a few generations. At any rate, the hen is a doll baby that loves me. The rooster tolerates me well, and never fights me. They are inseparable, and he never picks on her. I’m pretty sure left on their own, she will go broody. So I got an extra portable chicken run so when she is sitting on a clutch, he can be moved out. I was thinking of selling them or giving them away but now after this video, I’m definitely keeping them. With chicken prices at the store going through the roof this is the perfect solution for me. I would like to free range them, but I don’t have an electric fence yet. Now that I know more about this breed it’s possible that an electric chicken fence is in my future. 😂
