Thanks very much for doing all these tests... Here are time codes to quickly click backwards and forwards to re-check and re-compare anything. Vocals Only - SpectraLayers 01:06 - Moises 1:20 - Fadr 1:35 - RipX 01:50 - Original 02:04 Instrumental - SpectraLayers 02:52 - Moises 03:07 - Fadr 03:21 - RipX 03:36 Drums Only - SpectraLayers 04:10 - Moises 04:25 - Fadr 04:39 - RipX 04:53 Bass Only - SpectraLayers 05:25 - Moises 05:39 - Fadr 05:54 - RipX 06:08 I think SpectraLayers v10 wins in every category for this example - to my ears it has the best defined transients, best sound clarity and least artefacts.

I have been using RipX for about 5 months now and have been amazed at how consistently great it is at separating vocals to then be reused in remixing. Yes it does have artefacts but once you get to know your way around the visual display and the noise layer at the bottom of the extract which you can either delete completely or go more carefully through it to delete all apart from the emphasised consonants like 's', 't', 'p' or 'b' then you can get truly clean vocals. It even works with harmonied voices....or where there has been reverb added to the vocal where you can pretty much strip that reverb off the vocal 80-90% of the way. It is incredible how far these products have come.

I agree, but it’s because you don’t have professionals doing these type of videos I mean, you know it’s ridiculous. Use a clear audio track with distinct separate parts and that’s the best for testing. This music sounds muddy and the singer is mumbling somewhat. I agree.

Fadr Basic (the free version) is great if you are happy with MP3 audio quality and just the 4 basic stems. I personally need WAV for all stems, and I think US $10/month or $100/year for Fadr Plus is a bit overpriced. For example, I would rather buy RipX on sale for only US $69 (or US $99 full price) which I think creates better quality stems than Fadr Plus and you own it forever... Anyway, I think right now SpectraLayers v10 has the best stem separation overall (in terms of well-defined transients, least artefacts and best sound quality, plus you can re-split the drum and vocal stems down even further into individual drum/percussion parts or lead vocal/backing vocal etc.). I just got an amazing Black Fri deal from Steinberg to cross-grade from iZotope RX which I think is the best value for money overall too, especially given all the other pro audio processing features SpectraLayers v10 offers... :)

I understand that the most popular music today does not use real instruments and so the song that you chose works fine. But it would be good if this were demonstrated with musical styles that still use real instruments. For example when you demonstrated the bass it was hard to tell anything on this example, since it is not really bass but rather a bassy level sound that is playing in most of these songs. It always sounds so muddy, you can't really discern much from it other than it is a low frequency in the range of bass, but the quality of it is always imprecise.

Spectralayers 10 is the cleanest with the least artifacts. But you are right, despite that RipX sounds more like the original. It depends what your planning to do with the stems. For AI voice training I would still prefer the cleanest version from Spectralayers 10. For remixing I would prefer the RipX version because you could work around most artifacts. Thank you for the comparison and have a nice day!

Great video and it's nice to see someone doing these. I have both RipX and SL Pro 10. By tweaking the BEST preset in SL 10, SL 10 can be better than RipX and the other AI stem separators. Here are some tips for improving SL 10. Sample rate 4096 or higher, always select one stem plus OTHER when doing stem separation. So do, Vocals + Other, Drums + Other, etc. Not all at the same time. This makes the engine work better. Of course, this depends on the source audio and the program. Sometimes RipX has been better on the vocals than the others.
