I just got back from Nashville and went by the Gibson Garage. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve played a lot of amazing Gibsons (mostly SGs and Explorers) but I was pretty shocked at how many $3k+ instruments had paint issues, buffing compound present, and tool marks all over the fretboards. In their own showroom.
@ErickC Жыл бұрын
My experience (your mileage may vary) is that the best Gibsons are the cheap ones, particularly the low-end faded ones made between 2005 and 2008. Beyond that? Fuck that shit; it's just diminishing returns. Get a Greco or an Orville instead if you want a "Gibson-style" instrument. I only paid more than $1k for a Gibson once, and that's because it was a 60's model that they don't make any more.
@DawnofExistence Жыл бұрын
@@ErickC it really seems that way. I’ve played a few really great Les Pauls from the late 80s but I’ve also played a lot of really bad playing ones as well. We’re both ESP/LTD players in my band and I’m looking at grabbing an Edwards LP and Explorer sometime soon.

Well, it isn't that bad when you consider that the price includes a hardshell case. The Arrow doesn't come with a case, so the extra cost for a case would be $300. Technically, the Kirk Hammett V is only $100 more than the Arrow because the KH-V comes with a hardshell case. That accounts for $300 of the price increase right there. If the buyer doesn't need a hardshell case, then I can see that being a nonstarter, but as a gigging musician, a hardshell case is a must have. It's the same guitar, exact specs, same case and the paint is not even some custom work, every single one is exactly the same...

Few things to mention that may clear up a few things for Glenn: 1) The guitar string height may have been set up closer to Hammett's preferred height. Hammett has mentioned on numerous occasions that he prefers a very high string height as he wants to feel his guitar "fighting back". I don't personally understand that, but that may be why the string height was an issue for you here. 2) The increased cost may be a product of part of all sales of the newer released guitars goes towards their All Within My Hands foundation. Not only do they donate a huge portion of their show's revenue to this foundation, but now all guitars sold has a couple hundred bucks go towards it. So if you buy these guitars, know that yes it's a higher cost these days, but you're also giving back to help get more kids into all of the arts, but primarily music. I own almost all of Hetfield's collection including the limited release purple baritone Snakebyte. I want his new camo one, but the increase in cost compared to previous generations does give me pause. Going from $1299 to $1899 seems like a fairly steep jump to me. 3) Outside of the mastering of Death Magnetic, which I admit is problematic, that album has some very strong songs particularly if you're playing them on guitar. My drummer and I absolutely love playing All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, and My Apocalypse.

The extra $400 is hardly about the wood, or whatever. It's definitely about covering royalty expenses. Most signature products are slightly pricier than their standard counterparts because the artist makes a cut out of each sale. I would like to verify if there's a difference in tone for different woods in acoustic instruments. I suspect there might be a difference in resonance and sustain, depending on the density of the wood, provided the construction method is the same. That would be an awesome experiment!

Once I listened to it with headphone I started getting into it much more. Same with the new one. There are miniscual differences between the arrow and the Kirk Hammet. It’s mostly custom voicing and changes in the low and midrange.

I bought an LTD M100FM in like 2014 and it has performed flawless since it showed up. Still has the budget floyd that came with it and it's fine too.

I can!! We have, Unforgiven 3, Broken Beat and Scarred, All Nightmare Long, Cyanide, Suicide and Redemption. For the follow up album: Hardwired, Hardwired, Atlas Rise, Now That We're Dead, Mother Into Flames, Halo on Fire, Spit on the Bone, Man-Unkind. Do I continue? Oh the hidden gem that everyone hated and then loved, All Within My Hands S&M2 version.

I have an LTD EC--1000 CTW (thick body, no body cut like the regular EC/Eclipse) that I bought about 15 years ago. I love that guitar. The action is fantastic. I went with SD Alnico II passive pickups, and love them. I played Gibson SGs and Ibanez guitars in my playing days, and the LTD was a departure for me. I wish LTD existed when I was a young, struggling musician with tight budgets and no shortage of crappy instrument options. If I were 20 again and that guitar was an option, I'd have a suite of them for recording and touring.

I've had my james hetfield iron cross ltd for over 8 years now. Still never adjusted it to this day because it still plays just as well as it did when i got it. LTD rules!

if you try the guitars thru just an amp and not processed you will hear the difference. it might not be huge but the little things here and there add up and its mostly how it feels when playing. if you play any guitar thru a heavily processed rig you wont hear the difference much if at all.even if you compare a Strat to a les Paul, a processed rig makes it to where you cant tell. you are definitely right about the speaker being the big difference in tone. I already know you dont think resonance of the wood has anything to do with it. 🤣its cool ,, im not crying about the fact we disagree about strumming a guitar unplugged. love your channel glenn!

Korina is Limba wood. There's "White Limba" which is light blond throughout (what Gibson used), and "Black Limba" which has grey and brown sometimes nearing black streaks and dramatic figuring, and as a guitar builder I like black Limba for it's looks, and also because it works easily and doesn't dull bits and blades as bad as some other woods.
@Bob-of-Zoid Жыл бұрын
@B WJ Actually, they used it as a feature of the early flying V's, and only used clear lacquer. Only years later did they make many in mahogany too, and since neither has any figuring or at least it's very rare, they are great for painting. Painting over flame maple is a crime! Translucent color and dies can make good figuring more dramatic. Black Limba can have very dramatic color variation, but Gibson didn't use it, they used white Limba. It's also hard to find sexy lumber, and when you do, have the means to pull the trigger and buy it, which can be like buying concert tickets!

To me (listening on studio monitors), the Kirk Hammet Signature hit mostly in the upper mids but still had some low mids, while the Arrow hit mostly in the low mids and had a scoop in the upper mids. Whether from the woods used or the pickups/preamps used, or a combination of the two, I think changing a little amp EQ, speakers, and micing could deliver similar results for either. I personally prefered the Kirk Hammet Sig because I think it would work better in a mix, but I also think there probably is another guitar in LTD's lineup that could do a similar job given a bit of modification

It's nice to know a channel that doesn't bend over backwards for a company that can't stop their headstocks from breaking for decades.

I don’t know for the prices in the US or in Canada, but here in Europe the Arrow cost 1599€. If you add the ESP Hardcase at 289€ you have to spend 1888€ when the KH-V cost 1889€.

For V-style guitar I'll always go with Arrows. Have one and it's amazing. Second would be Alexi signatures. They look great but are way more expensive for me.

As someone who's not a Metallica fan (some of their earlier stuff was okay but not for me, and The Black Album is about the only full album I somewhat enjoy), I found the pot-shots you took at Metallica hilarious. At least the guys at LTD are making a good guitar!

Honestly though Glen, your getting a hellofa lot better on guitar,so no matter what anyone says in the comments of your videos,don’t stop practicing and doing what you do,I enjoy the videos and I have enjoyed hearing about all the different speakers on your channel,I just loaded a new line 6 cab with two dv-77 and two omega Vm-1265 and it’s crazy good man,maybe you can try these two speakers together on the channel and show what two speakers besides the vintage 30’s sound like…just a great alternative with big sound can do..thanks

Got my alien tech green Kramer Mustaine in yesterday. Aside from needing a setup, it’s really good quality. The QC did a good job, and they use CTS pots and what looks like to me a decent solder job. No finish blemishes cracks or warping on mine at all. Really enjoying it so far. I’d like to see your take on one soon.

I was listening while cooking and was not watching the screen. When i heard you pose the challenge i raced into the room just in time to see the purple guitar. The purple one DEFINITELY sounded muddy. The first one sounded much brighter and more balanced.
