Honestly I’m excited to see this “upgrade”. You’re the reason why I went with the original Harley Benton 212. I love that I can get a great tone (even if it is a little common) for such a low price! I use my Harley Benton 212 live and I’ve NEVER had someone say “that sounded cheap” or “my mesa sounds waaaayyyyy better than that”. I’m a beginner. I have a Boss Katana 50 watt Mk2. I swapped out the stock speaker with a 75 watt Celestian Creamback and cut a cheap piece of pine wood to make the 50MK2 a semi open back like the 100 watt Boss Katana Artist. Metal sounds absolutely awesome at the low volumes I play in my condo. I’m really happy with it and enjoying it a lot.

Yes!!! Great to hear the news that Thomann is listening. And thank you Glenn for letting us know that they released it. I preferred the sound of rig B in the shootout, but wasn't crazy about either sound... Which for me, I think, is that e906. I haven't been able to come around to liking its sound yet. The Royer R-10 is my current favorite flavor mic. It's super forgiving to use too, but it's hardly as affordable as the 906 or a 57.
@soundman140211 ай бұрын
Try a Beyerdynamic M201! It's not flavor at all, actually; just a very hi-fi dynamic mic with a flat response. I've got four of 'em now and I've used them on a lot of sources, and they kick ass on all of them. Also especially good on snare. Downside: Beyerdynamic just jacked the price up $100 this year, so they're now $400 (USD). What changed? The paint. LAME.

I’m not against changing speakers and getting a different sound at all, and I’m DEFINITELY sold on the difference it can make, but from a listener’s perspective, live and on a record, I’ve never ever said to my self “wow these guys sound the same as everyone else using vintage 30s”. Even though I know probably MOST of my favorite bands over the years have probably used them. I don’t think I can tell when a band or engineer chose a different mic or speakers on the record. Can this get lost in the recording process?
@travisspaulding222211 ай бұрын
That's because no one says that. If you want to sound unique, it has to be in the music. If you're playing the same shit everyone else is, Greenbacks won't save you. While I agree a speaker change is the most significant change you can put on an amp and your tone, it isn't a magic key to new sounds. That's gotta come from the musician.

Both rigs sounded great; If you told me I could get a great sound for not much money and it would be either tone, but I couldn't know in advance which tone went to which rig, I'd honestly take it, sight unseen. Yeah there was a slight difference in tone - one sounded a little warmer than the other to me - but both sounded "record-ready" which is what matters. But this pales in comparison to the real star of the show - Nigel! He's just spectacular.

@ukaszpalkowski855211 ай бұрын
When I needed a new cab for my band rehearsals, I didn't opt for Mesa, Marshall, HB, or Zilla. Instead, I ordered a custom-made horizontal 2x12. It cost about $110 for the cab without speakers. It has almost the same specifications as the MB 2x12, and no, there’s no 'MDF inside.' Then, I began experimenting with different speakers. The best combination, to my ears, was the Eminence DV-77 paired with the Swamp Thang. I achieved my unique sound for a little less than $500 (Eminence is expensive, after all). Since it was custom-made, there was no fancy logo on the front. I used a cheap 3D pen to add my own name to it! Now, I have a one-of-a-kind cab - both visually and sonically! So, listen to Uncle Glenn and put some effort into chasing your own tone! It’s f***ing worth it!

Also, your advice that you've given regarding recording, gear, techniques, etc. have been a fantastic help in my own home studio recordings, particularly learning the Fredman mic technique! I definitely owe you. Second, I wanted to weigh in on the blind test for this episode... I like Rig A better, it seems brighter and has a fuller body... I'm not even going to try to say which was which, I'm just going to leave it as Rig A winning. Rig B seemed a bit more dull and just lacked punch and body. It wasn't horrible or anything, it just lost to Rig A. Lastly, I've been watching you progress in your playing, you are just kickin' ass by leaps and bounds, so, that leaves me with this question... are you gearing up to possibly drop some Glen-shit on us at some point in the future? A bit more mid forward, I'd say. But not bad at all. So sonically it's not a choice between good and bad, it's a choice between two flavours. But one costs thousands of dollars less than the other. Which... becomes a choice between 'good for your wallet' vs 'bad for your wallet.' Thanks Glen for using real evidence to help us all save money, even if some weird folk seem to object...

I liked both mixes. The only reason I thought the A clip is the HB cab/6505+ is the high end. New speakers are typically brighter in my experience . Other than that, I’d use either rig and enjoy the hell out of it.

Rig A for rhythm tone and rig B for the lead but I could live with either tone for under $1k. Thanks for the demo, always informative

It’s nice to always hear different speaker alternatives. If people find something interesting about one particular speaker but they are unsure of using it by itself, they could also try speaker blends. The possibilities are endless in that realm

I love how whenever glenn has to demo a tone himself, rather than chuggy bs, he actually does chords, progressions, high strings AND 000s ... thank you for staying away from -core, glenn. eff you, love the show

Glen you say that Harley Benton knocked it out of the park but I think you knocked it out of the park yet again! However in this case we all win getting amazing gear for less money. As for the blind test I honestly can't tell which I like better, A sounded great on lead but I think sound B would suit a rhythm track a little better. They're both great but if I had to choose one I think I'd choose A. Thanks for another stand out video!

Greenbacks playing metal!?? Pfffft! And look at that full mix demo - all high end instruments with sweet, sweet tone wood producing ALL the tone! Whoops, had my sarcasm-lock on... Props to Harley Benton for listening and offering something left of the tried and true money making combo. Great vid as always Glenn

The thing that gets me with the Harley Benton cabs is that they pretty much cost the same or even less than just buying the speakers individually, depending on which retailer you’re getting the speakers from. Like, there’s no downside here. Even if you think the cab itself is junk (which it doesn’t seem to be), you can get one, try it, and if you don’t like it you can take the speakers out and put them in another cab (plenty of cab manufacturers who offer unloaded cabs) and you still haven’t lost much if any money.

Nice video. I liked "A" for the rhythm parts. "B" for the lead sound. I glad you do these blind tests. You eyes always deceive you, especially when it comes to sound! LOL

I own a pair of Sennheiser E906 since around 2012. They are some of my absolute favourites for guitar.

I bought a HB 2x12 v30 horizontal cab two years ago. Only paid $55 for shipping. No sales tax and it arrived in less than a week. A year later I bought a used Mesa 2x12 horizontal cab with UK made v30's and have to admit it's much better sounding than the Harley. The Harley even has the "good" V30's with the clearer dust cap.

When it comes to changing tone and saving weight IRs rule! You've proved that yourself. e609/e906 have been my go to mic for guitar cabs for a couple of decades now. BTW: the 609 silver is $99 US but the e906 with hi EQ contours are $199.95 US twice as expensive as the e609 silver which has a very similar frequency response to the SM57 [deliberately]. The 906 with the contour switch does the Silver EQ, Pre Silver EQ and flat like the 441 EQ. [The 441 being one of my favorite cab mics from my studio daze in the 80's] Both are side address which is an advantage over the SM57 for cab micing. As you pointed out, no stand required. I have the pre silver version of the e609 and I have a e906 both are my go-to guitar cab mics.

An e906 was the first cab mic I bought, and I never regretted that purchase. SM57 is super nice, but if I could only have one, it would definitely be the Sennheiser.

Finally the e906 gets some love here. I always liked it, and also it's little brother e609, way better than the dull old SM57.

B is the Harley Benton, you can hear the etxra grind and breakup on that set up. This is a great test as it shows that its just different tones

I like the E 906. I like the way it pairs up with my SM57 when I track two different speakers.

Another great vid Glenn. Against the grain thinking, I love it. Individuality has lost its meaning in the metal world. Keep it up man. Happy Holidays and have a great Christmas. Cheers!!!!

Doesn't help that when metal bands actually try something new the idiot "fans" label it as bad and/or non-metal. Mind you, both are occasionally true, but metalheads are fucking embarrassing sometimes. Example: Evolve by Chelsea Grin and The black crown by Suicide Silence. While both are now regarded as fine if not good, they were thrashed when they came out. Dare add cleans/nu metal influences? Sucks. Except it was one of the few times deathcore actually sounded unique For an earlier example, Projector by Dark Tranquillity. Possibly the best album in their discography, and it was torn to pieces when it came out because, repeat after me, they added synths and clean vocals. For a genre that once prided itself on its innovativeness, metal has become so stagnant and conservative

Hey glenn! Been watching since you started stupid musician texts a long time ago. I have to say that I like the newer style of videos with the funny little edits here and there. I've always liked your videos, but they're just that much more entertaining lol. Best of luck brother!

I like the B where it seemed to be a bit more rich in sound. The A sound like the more expansive one.

When I was 18 I saved up for a while and got the best cab I could afford: a decent shape $300 Crate 4x12. Everyone always used to tell me how bad my tone was on stage until I unscrewed the Crate nameplate and suddenly everyone was always complimenting me lol

Well, I was thinking about how a friend of mine needed a pair of Greenbacks, and then at the end of the video you reminded me of the Vox V212C, which is actually a box that I need an empty one of at this time. Thomann after shipping beats Sweetwater and Guitar Center by a scant few dollars, but a few dollars it is. 🤘Thanks Glenn!

Nice comparison. I love the Greenbacks. I recently picked up a 1991 Marshall 1960BX and they sound great. I mean, the EVH 4x12 cabs have Ed's own version of the Greenbacks... and that cab sounds incredible! Love mine. I'd say A is the PV+GB and B is the Soldano. I never heard of the soldano paired cab or speakers... so wild guess here!
