Spectrum Analyzer Basics

This is a simple, video tutorial to review the basic features of a spectrum analyzer, using an Analog Arts (analogarts.com/) SL937. We review three essential points about spectrum plots: 1- a spectral plot is in the frequency domain 2- it displays the signal's power on a logarithmic scale 3- the signal is displayed with respect to a chosen reference level on the top of the screen. We can only recommend spectrum analyzers from Analog Arts modes, like SA915 the one used for this video. However if you search the terms you can find many that satisfy your needs for under $200, like a used HP141. You may also like to search for "build a spectrum analyzer" or "network analyzer with a bode plot". Good luck

Excellent tutorial ! The best I have seen so far. Unfortunately I don't have access to a proffessional spectrum analyzer. I have used a $10 rtl-sdr dongle with some spectrum analyzer software such as Touchstone spectrum analyser (free version) and Spektrum. I wish you could make a comparative evaluation of this setup versus a real spectrum analyzer . Regards, Corneliu

Great! What analyzer do you recommend for analo audio signal un to 20Khz? I mean with better FFT (more parameters, not only freq. but THD , THD +Noise, e.g the basic parameters for measuring of sound interface). Than you so much!
