Spectrum to the Point - 4 Recumbent trikes riding to Dana Point CA

We took a fun route that I have not done in a long time (and some parts I have never tried) from the Irvine Spectrum area to Dana Point for lunch, and returned through the upper part of Laguna Canyon. Four Trike riders - Mike, Cliff, Jonathan and myself.

This was fun to watch, Glenn. I was inspired by your videos to get a trike last year, thank you very much. But here in Illinois, with our eternal winter, I can only sit in my chair and watch your excellent trike adventures. It's obvious that you and your friends enjoy being out on your trikes.

yes, closer to the beach there are many more walkers and dogs. in most of the hills there are fewer or no walkers because it is so far between places where one can enter the trail. Fun trail though.

Thanks... yeah I recognize your face icon from the facebook group too. i have a lot of videos uploaded on my channel so if you want to browse through them there are a lot of adventures. I try to get a new video online either every week or every two although I cant always promise that. ;-)

I'll definitely be looking through them. I plan to do some videoing myself once I get my trike. Albeit, the editing will not be as good as yours, lol. You can't beat the Mac Software for video editing nor graphics. Unfortunately I don't own a Mac, lol. Long range weather forecast says steady above freezing temperatures week after next. With a little rain to wash the salt off the roads I'll be riding. Yippee! My trike riding friends are in Florida for the Catrike Rally. Next year I'll be there.

Duc Pham Well I try to ride a few times during the week on my lunch hour in the anaheim, yorba linda, placentia and orange area. on weekends it varies sometimes Saturday mornings... sometimes Sundays. we don't usually have a set time or place. do you have your own trike? are you one of the riders in your video?

Yeah this was a fun ride. One of two trails in the area where you actually have to climb some hills. most of them are pretty flat. Also one of my favorite videos that I have made recently.

dregerclock Thanks for keeping in the "Wrong Gear Syndrome" segment. I so been there, so done that. Can't get out of the gear, don't want to get off the trike, so it turns into a pattern of brake, quarter back spin, brake, quarter pedal, and repeat. Argggghhh! Indeed. Also looked at Cliff's video of this journey. Given the leggings changes that happen here, did you merge some of his filming, or did he borrow your goPro?

Glenn, very inspiring video. Contemplating getting a Catrike. What model were you riding in the video? Had a recent total knee replacement taxed from several decades of military service. Rode MTBs and Road bikes, but now looking at recumbent trikes like yours. Hope to ride after terrible winter here in the DC area. Jealous of your SoCal weather. Miss my years there while attending USC. Safe rides.

Thanks Anthony. The trike I have is a Catrike "Road" (the older hardtail version from 2010 - the newer Road models have the rear suspension system). Jonathan is riding a Catrike Expedition, Mike is on an HP Veloteknic FS and Cliff is riding an I.C.E. Sprint. All are great trikes. If you can find a place nearby to test ride a few different trikes I am sure you will find one that fits you!

What kind(s) of Terra Trike(s) do you have? I ride a Tour II, like it very much, currently just have a minor problem with gears clicking back and forth between adjacent rear sprockets near the middle of the range. I worked in Costa Mesa for several months a few... well a lot of years ago, but now live in another state and miss California a lot -- especially when watching your videos! I did not know it was possible to go under the 5 freeway until I watched you do it on one of these videos where you commute to work. So if you ride back you are riding two hours a day, great for health.

Hi Ralph, Thanks for the comments. None of the trikes in this particular vehicle are Terra Trike brand trikes. Mine and Jonathan's are Catrikes, Cliff's is an I.C.E. and Mike is riding an HP Veloteknik Trike. But I used to have a Terra Trike Tour model. (still have it actually - cleaning and fixing it up -- to sell eventually) yes there are a lot of trails here that go under or over the freeways. you just have to figure out where they are! And they have been adding more to them over the past few years. Now one trail goes under the 405 near the Irvine Spectrum area too. Enjoy the TT T II !

Ralph Dratman Mine is an older 2010 model Catrike ROAD (which is a hard tail 20" wheels all around.) the new current model of the ROAD is now a shock absorber rear wheel (hard tail no longer made) but the EXPEDITION model that Jonathan is riding is simular to min except that it has the larger rear wheel. it is a fun and healthy addiction! best advice... try a number of trikes if you can and see what you like best. everyone is different about what they like and dislike. but there is a good fit for you out there.

Ralph Dratman I started on a Terratrike Rover, it was a good entry level trike. The Tour II is a nicer model than the Rover. Catrikes, HP Velotechnik and ICE are now the three manufacturers that I prefer.The build quality and engineering in them is excellent. Like Dregerclock said, you should ride a few and see what suits your needs and body type.

I only ask because I test rode a couple this morning and found them all comfy around the lot the Road was best but out of my current budget . Catrike expedition and the terratrike tour II close in price. So any long term insight to overall quality would be great.

dang glen yeah put on some miles im lucky to put in 16 miles a day on my recumbent and yeah do 40 on trikes how do you manage that let me in on your secert

well if you are doing 16 or so a day every day of the week... you could probably do 40 in one ride if you just take your time. I try t oget in at least 3 - 4 10 or 12 mile rides at lunch per week... and sometimes get a 27 mile round trip commute to work by trike per week... and then one of these rides on the weekend. I shoot for 100 miles a week total but sometimes get less than that. Just keep up the riding consistently and you can do it. Hill climbing is also great conditioning to increase your range. even if you don't do a lot of miles on hills it builds your strength and stamina.

I try for 1 long mileage day per week but it doesn't always happen specially so far this year to cold and icey here half the winter. And the other half working a lot of long hours to doesn't help but half the time when I get off work I don't feel like riding so tired and draggie . I love to ride every chance I get. I put in 16 miles today. Took me 2 hours to do it at 8 mph that would make sense huh? But maybe I can work in to it I'm sure gonna try.

wbuttry1 Yeah, I am lucky in that I am able to take an hour to ride at lunch and our work environment is pretty casual so my boss does not mind me coming in and cleaning up a bit in the office. In fact.. he and two of my co workers started riding bikes too! I also have a pretty decent route to commute to work by trike (9 of the 13.5 miles one way are on trail) so I can get in some riding that way too. If I did not have those options I would pretty much be left with only weekends to ride.

Well it varies. with a group like this usually we will average only 10 - 11 mph because of stops and breaks... but moving we are probably doing 16 ish to 18 on flat areas, 20+ on downhills and probably only 6- 8 on climbs.
