I "appreciate" the direct transfer of knowledge happening here. I think the simple definition of "investment" versus "speculation" of collectibles that you make is: - An investment utilizes historical data (min. 30 years) of sales of this specific item to predict future appreciation - A speculation utilizes short term performance or comparing "possibly" "similarly" performing pop culture products to predict future appreciation

First video of yours I've watched. I'm personally more of a collector, been a natural born collector since I was about six years old starting with baseball cards. But I love learning about the investment aspect of my collecting. Especially since I'm always trying to collect things that are undervalued. Will keep watching.

Hey Shaun, just popped by this video. Been binge 'watching/listening' to your videos like a podcast, not exactly staring at the video in its long format but periodically looking at the video as I'm usually doing something else so I treat it like a 'video' podcast. Loving this format of videos. And you're really clear and patient in explaining and reiterating the concepts of economics which I find really helpful. Please keep doing what you're doing. Your watch to subscriber ratio is solid. Also I usually see a overwhelmingly positive to negative ratio in your videos so you're obviously doing something right in terms of educating us. Haha, I'm slightly worried your channel will gain huge traction and the increasing number of people who watch your videos regularly will cause those speculative bubbles to burst alot of quicker. Hopefully, I would have sold most of my Funko Pop collection by then. Already made a few profits from the speculation. But thanks for saving me from a long-term future of disappointment in keeping them long-term. Learnt alot from you this past week!

Ive done relatively well unintentionally in gaming because I never followed trends and only bought sealed product of games I both played and liked. The result was I paid very little for assets that eventually rose in value as others caught on later. Go figure.

Why would you invest in anything just to expect a 1-3% return? You're barely keeping pace with inflation at that rate.

True, but if you have a 20-40 year time horizon, that's an awfully low return. Why not rebalance into those assets as we age, like a bond portfolio? In the meantime treat collectibles like growth stocks.

By that same logic why would anyone have a savings account? Most established antique/collectibles are more like value stocks than growth stocks. They are also extremely liquid. That’s what makes them best for a long term diversified portfolio.

Fair point. We always need dry powder, and cash is king during recessions. I'd just argue that a smaller percentage of your portfolio should be allocated there when you're young, otherwise you leave a lot of growth on the table. All cash parked in a savings account the last 10+ years has lost purchasing power.

Investing: Expectation of a return based on an agreement (bond yields, preferred stock dividends, interest on note payables, rental income...) Speculating: Hoping for a return (as stated in the video) based on predicting the future demand/popularity of the purchased commodity. The usage of the term "investing" in the context of antiques/collectibles is an oxy-moron.

Collectables are a horrible investment. What's hot now may be a not later plus you have to store them, keep them safe, then you always have to worry about authenticity issues. I'll stick with index funds and real estate.

I'm actually not disagreeing with you. It depends on the investor/speculator and the risk versus reward quotient thy are comfortable with. However, overall and in most cases, the index funds can be the better long term investment...

@@ReservedInvestments thank you. There's nothing wrong with collecting as a hobby. I thought about getting into coin collecting myself as it'd be nice to pass down a coin collection to my children. I just don't think it's a good investment strategy for the aforementioned reasons.
