Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans Research Article Mechanism of the Centennial Subpolar North Atlantic Cooling Trend in the FGOALS-g2 Historical Simulation Yifei Fan,Jianhua Lu,Laifang Li First published: 19 August 2021
@rudy1030693 жыл бұрын
Abstract A cold blob, manifested as a centennial cooling trend in sea surface temperature (SST), is observed in the mid-latitude North Atlantic. The presence of the cold blob is hypothesized as an evidence of a slowdown of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), based on paleoclimate proxies and global climate models (GCMs). However, the performance of GCMs in simulating the cold blob remains unsatisfactory in terms of the SST cooling rate and the spatial extent. This study investigates the forcing mechanism of the cold blob using the Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System Model Grid-point version 2 (FGOALS-g2), a GCM that reasonably simulates the observed cooling trend in the subpolar North Atlantic and its spatial pattern. Surface heat budget analysis suggests that the cold blob is largely a result of the imbalance between changes in the heat storage and surface turbulent heat fluxes, exhibiting a cooling and warming effect, respectively. Investigation of ocean heat content indicates that heat advection into the cold blob region has decreased, mainly due to ocean circulation changes. However, in the FGOALS-g2, both the AMOC slowdown and the reduced meridional heat transport explain a limited portion (less than 50%) of the cold blob sea surface temperature anomaly trend. Overall, complementing existing studies that attribute the cold blob to an AMOC slowdown, our results suggest that additional processes, including subpolar gyre circulation and a synergy between the atmosphere and the ocean, are at work in the formation of the cold blob.
@rudy1030693 жыл бұрын
Abstract A well-known exception to rising sea surface temperatures (SST) across the globe is the subpolar North Atlantic, where SST has been declining at a rate of 0.39 (± 0.23) K century−1 during the 1900-2017 period. This cold blob has been hypothesized to result from a slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Here, observation-based evidence is used to suggest that local atmospheric forcing can also contribute to the century-long cooling trend. Specifically, a 100-year SST trend simulated by an idealized ocean model forced by historical atmospheric forcing over the cold blob region matches 92% (± 77%) of the observed cooling trend. The data-driven simulations suggest that 54% (± 77%) of the observed cooling trend is the direct result of increased heat loss from the ocean induced by the overlying atmosphere, while the remaining 38% is due to strengthened local convection. An analysis of surface wind eddy kinetic energy suggests that the atmosphere-induced cooling may be linked to a northward migration of the jet stream, which exposes the subpolar North Atlantic to intensified storminess.

6:40 minutes of an 8:20 presentation before she glanced at her notes. More than a prepared speech; rather, if it's passionately inscribed on your heart, it becomes easier to pour out of your being. Represent, Madame Prime Minister!! Represent!!!

@@Raineygoodyears maybe your creator has been telling y’all to STOP harming the earth, and y’all won’t listen. So this is the wrath of that disobedience. Simple enough to me.

@@Steeze365Daily SIN is harming the earth...Not what GOD has made like "Oil Water and earths Minerals" If they really want to clean up some of the mess on earth then STOP using plastics, go back to using paper as in paper bags from the dead trees no one bothers cleaning up. When I was a kids paper was used for most everything and glass. Maybe these leaders can muster up a bit of common sense.
@Steeze365Daily3 жыл бұрын
@@Raineygoodyears & that’s exactly the conversation they’re having right now. Capitalism makes it not so simple for big companies to just switch plastics out, but yes, they need to choose greener alternatives. That’s why COP26 is so important & could possibly be the tipping point of the direction we’ll be going on towards are greener world.

@@Steeze365Daily Does it really take a COP26 event for companies on there own to switch from plastic to paper and glass. Apparently it is.. However I agree with you on that one..
