I miss those days. You had everything in the 80s till the early 90s if you were into socially conscious rap you had xXclan,public Enemy ,Queen Latifa,Sista Souljah,Krs -1 ,if you wanted gangsta rap you had NWA, DJ Quik,Ice Cube,SCC,Kid Frost,Booya Tribe to name a few. If you wanted positive and dancing hiphop you had the Fat boys, DjJazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince,Kid n Play,Heavy d and the boys,Tribe called Quest ,MC hammer, if you wanted raunchy rap you had Too short,HWA,2 Live Crew, 2nd to None. And many I forgot to mention. After that meeting by the elites gangsta rap was promoted exclusively and hurted society and almost destroyed hiphop.

At the time Arrested Development was not really seen as a true hip-hop group like A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul. They were seen more as pop, mainly because they got so big and accepted by the mainstream so quick. So when they won the Grammy it was more of a "White People Love Them" award. The rap world didn't really care. They never got the inclusion or respect of other rap groups that were also popping at the time. Now of course 28 years later everybody likes to pretend that was not the case.
@tonym92274 жыл бұрын
I disagree with that. Mainly because they never got any verbal backlash at that time, like MC Hammer and other artists got. AD didn't travel in the same circles as other artists...posse cuts, guest spots on other artists' records. They were a self-contained posse. 😉 But I never got the "white people's choice" or sellout vibe from them or toward them. I don't think they were ever looked at as a pop group. Speech rapped on every song.
@ScarlettFevers4 жыл бұрын
@@tonym9227 U made their point for them. My nana loved them... never thought they were a “rapper group”. Ur also correct. They were definitely hip hop.
@theDavidChannel14 жыл бұрын
@@tonym9227 I didn't mean they were viewed as sellouts because what they were doing was very Afrocentric, but their songs caught on so much with the mainstream they were immediately viewed as pop. I remember even here in LA, they got more radio play on the alternative rock station and top 40 station than on the rap stations lol. They definitely drew a larger "mellow coffee shop" white audience than other rap groups at the time. And awards organizations like the Grammys were always shunning the real artists like Wu Tang, Tribe, Snoop, etc. but they loved them some Arrested Development because it was nice and friendly.
@iamhim56354 жыл бұрын

I must admit, the _Grammy's_ are sorta boring to me. Labels can purchase awards, etcetera beforehand. It's all a game. Not taking any credit away from Arrested Development, but I've acquired so much knowledge over the years. Whatever these executives and labels want the general public to hear, that's what we'll hear, period. Whatever these executives and labels don't want the general public to hear, we won't hear, period. It's their label - their call. Labels lose interest in artists because they're always looking and booking ahead. Why do we know and love Shai's hit singles from they first LP and have no idea about they sophomore LP? There's a reason to that. Soon as R. Kelly's music started to fizzle out, he started getting into super trouble. Why wasn't he getting into super trouble when his music was hot? There's a reason to that as well. Anyhow, it was highly disrespectful for the _Grammy's_ to not air the rap/hip-hop category along w/ the other categories. By that time, hip-hop was a legit money-maker. They done gave rappers all kinds of bad deals, done jacked and jerked them all around, financially and they _cain't_ even have the common courtesy of being shown receiving they awards. That's some cold business. But alas, hip-hop was a fad that wouldn't last - so they said. It ended up being the most popular art form in the doggon world. What are the odds? My ex-husband, Treach from Naughty by Nature *DEFINITELY* deserved to win all of the awards. He was so ill on that microphone and he was obviously easy on the eyes. So much soul and flavor. Just good music. Mr. Denzel Washington deserved an award for _Malcolm X_ through and through. I enjoyed the soundtrack as well. Love the record you did for it, Todd. That was my jam.
