None of it is hard--if you know how. But the problem with any "speed docking" is IF the damn engine dies; everything is relying on everything working--perfectly. For my money, even if you are an expert--prove it by going slow, taking your time and making a good example to others who are learning. No, I'm not an expert, never said I was.
@KevinMcNallyBoatnuck8 жыл бұрын
+Jmichael Isbell Been lucky and only lost an engine about 20 or thirty times. ( haven't hit anything yet where there was damage caused but it's only a matter of time I'm sure. In the meantime, I'll keep practicing. Thank you for the comment
@jimquantic8 жыл бұрын
Well, I must also say, that YOU are not guilty of going too fast. I saw your video, you ARE in fact proceeding correctly. I have seen the actual "speed dock" competition on the East Coast--but of course that is a professional thing and THEY are going too fast--too fast for the average boater. It's cool to watch though, they fly past the dock, cram it in reverse, the cloud of smoke goes up and as they stab the boat in, one crewman tosses one rope ring on the port, the other hits the starboard.
@KevinMcNallyBoatnuck8 жыл бұрын
+Jmichael Isbell : Thanks for the comments. Those speed docking competitions are quite something. I enjoy pretty much any boating videos and find it amazing how critical some folks are on KZbin.

Well you know, "safe in the shadows" sort of like the bravery people show, safe in their cars. But for boating, it seems like you see better manners, maybe cause most of us really enjoy and appreciate boating, trailers, fishing, camping, not quite as easy to get in a twist over that stuff. I boat out of Long Beach, launch at 2nd street, see you on the water. Regards.

Of course...this is only possible with twin props. I ran a 34 ft. crew boat for 3 years and had an aft - deck steering and controls as well as in - cabin. The boat had twin Detroit diesels, twin props, and twin rudders. I could thread a needle with that boat. However...I had to "bring it in" 3 or 4 times with one engine. That "changed everything." I also ran a single engine, single prop, and single rudder boat...very, very limited maneuverability.

That's really excellent twin throttle control, but let's call it like it is and let's not rag on having a joystick and call it cheating!? I consider it to be a safety item in that it only makes whomever is docking that boat with one much safer than otherwise so it can only be a good thing. Yes, I would say practice without it and get used to the twin controls, but I wouldn't get another boat without a Volvo Penta 2nd gen on joystick ever. So much easier and comfortable and that's what boating is all about. But great docking skills and thanks for sharing that.
@KevinMcNallyBoatnuck9 жыл бұрын
GoMiGman Thanks for the comment - wasn't really ragging - twas just for the sake of that video. I see many folks who buy Joystick boats thinking they don't need to learn how to drive a boat unfortunately. That being said, I sell Joystick boats all the time so I can't really rag on them. Just wish more boaters would take a lesson or too so they don't just rely on joystick. Happy boating

wooowww thats difficult.... no wind & no water current & small boat
@KevinMcNallyBoatnuck7 жыл бұрын

way easier to dock a big boat than a small boat.. its a lot harder to get my sundancer 260 into a tight slip than my dads 52 sedan bridge. if there was some serious wind and current would still of effected him tho, many people underestimated what bit of wind can do. Especially if you have a light front like my sundancer has. once you cut throttle and the wind gets it your basically screwed and have to go all over again. cheers
