Allright guys, so if you want to make it unique, then Zbrush + 3ds Max for props and mountains, Speedtree for trees and grass, World Machine for distant landscapes and there we go, once you have all of it ready and in place you can start building just like he does. But it will take you couple of weeks to build all of that lol, if you create your own models, instead of using ready packages.

That was really cool to watch, from the perspective of someone who has not actually done anything like this, but plays games. I'm sure the pros will come and judge each other, but I'm impressed. I always thought that things like trees, grass, and repetitive things like roads would be procedurally generated, not hand placed. Or maybe they are in some instances, depending on the engine.
@Mousetral6 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone else takes the time to think about this but. Technology/Gaming has evolved. A LOT! It went from being a little simple 2D game where you jump and avoid enemies. To a 3D Game with realistic textures, trees, grass, and basically everything.. It's kinda scary how much technology/gaming has evolved..

Nice works, instant subscribe. Here's some challenge to ya: a scene inspired by the very first unreal game - whether it's a mountainous Na Pali landscape with a waterfall, some nali houses and/or chushed human spaceship and 2 suns in the sky, or a scaarj base in a nali skyhaven, or any other map.
@samsutherland89328 жыл бұрын
Is this actually how they would make an outdoor level for a real video game? Would they actually use multiple instances of assets like SM_MarsdonCliff to build the landscape? Seems like there would be a lot of hidden, useless geometry which the player would never see. In a real game, wouldn't they build the explore-able landscape out of a single large mesh?
@RaiohRai8 жыл бұрын
I know this is late, but I wanted to answer. Creating a explore-able world outside of the normal playing area would use more resources while playing and would likely cause performance issues.
@buunuu.8 жыл бұрын
+Rai He's talking about how the terrain is made. The terrain is made with things like the mountains where they are massive and that would actually make the terrain. the terrain is very low poly usually since its a massive model, so when they need more detail in the terrain they add things like those massive rock pieces. they can be placed in ways that are much more efficient than how he did it, though it pretty much works the same.
@granearl24388 жыл бұрын
What he's talking about is that when he makes the whole scenery, he uses the same asset repeatedly and clips them so they look like a solid, continuous asset. The question he asks, is if all that clipped geometry that isn't really being seen takes resources and is how companies actually make videogames.
@shamsmehdi37258 жыл бұрын
good question. thumb this up so we can know the answer.
@Nootrya7 жыл бұрын
Sorry i'm late! Using the same mesh actually take less resources than multiple different mesh, so we have to trick the player! more different meshs is more performence required. And yes, in an open world we create a landscape wich is a single component (and a huge one) there is a tool called "Landscape" in UE for that :D

Amazing! I'm a 3rd year Game Artist student, mainly focusing on 3d modeling and level design. I've only really used Unity for game design, and although I like the stuff that I can make with that, unreal looks so good aswell! How much different is it from Unity, and do you think it's worth it to take a step back from unity and try out unreal for some time? Awesome work.
@Maverick999 жыл бұрын
S.G. van Dort I think it's handy to be fluent in more than one engine if you want to learn the business. Unreal is basically the same concept as Unity when you get down to it in terms of level design. Depending on the kind of games you want to make, really should define what engine you want to learn to master.
