I had ordered the CSM Combat Patrol with full intention of painting Black Legion. Then I saw this video. Yeah, it's no contest. Immediately ordered a can of Leadbelcher along with Akhelian Green and Contrast Medium. As someone new to the hobby, I can't thank you enough for providing such a clear and (hopefully) easy method of getting phenomenal results. If mine come out looking even half as good as the one in this video, I'll be thrilled. Thanks again!

You can still do this with an Airbrush on vehicles. Prime Black, Dry brush generously with a bright silver then airbrush the contrast on it, you'll get the same effect as the marines, but it only works right with the airbrush

Love this. Had been trying a few other paints and guides. Yours was straightforward and easiest to follow. One question: any suggestion if I should use a brush to maintain panels of silver vs using an airbrush with Akhelian green? Any tips or pros/cons? (I’m looking for the fastest way possible lol)

Why are you painting a chaos space marine with alpha legion colour 🤔🤔🤔
@AzureKite619 Жыл бұрын
Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm doing the Akhelian Green + Contrast Medium but when I apply it to the model it goes on kind of thick and leaves behind some dark sploches and streaks. Do you water down the mix? I assume it's just the AG + CM then applied to the model, no water included. I primed the model with Leadbelcher spray can primer, applied the Nuln Oil and drybrushed the Runefang Steel.
@criticalhitwargaming5290 Жыл бұрын
Contrast Paint is a bit of a pain in the arse to use. It's not watered down at all, but you need more on your brush than you'd use for normal paint, and you need to make sure you don't ever paint over an area you've just painted. You'll see in the video I never go over the same bit twice, or it ends up drying exactly as you have described.

WoW!! Can I do the same thing with black legion and undercoat it with gold >> nuln oil >> abaddon black? then fill in the highlights with a silver and red ? ty bro and nice work
@criticalhitwargaming52903 жыл бұрын
Black Legion it's actually quicker to paint the gold trim on Black armour, believe it or not. Painting Black over a gold undercoat would take substantially longer. :( I know this as I have tried!

@@criticalhitwargaming5290 i really like the look of your alpha legion and word bearers minis, specifically the shading on the silver and the metallic red/turqoise Can I paint black legion in a similar fashion? and if so what colours would i need (for this same look) cheers
@criticalhitwargaming52903 жыл бұрын
@@persiusjackson6673 You can paint them the same way, yes, but in all honesty it doesn't look particularly good and it takes a long time. Black Legion are black and gold, and black contrast over gold undercoat looks really awful. Which means you need to undercoat it silver, do the black, and then manually paint in all the gold trim. This will probably take you over an hour per model. The best thing to do would be to replicate the Alpha Legioj scheme, but use black instead. Just do black and silver Black Legion, which wouldn't look bad and is still 'lore friendly' as the Black Legion warbands wear lots of different styles of armour, as long as the main colour is black.

Would this work on vehicles like Venom Crawlers, Helbrutes, forgefiend and obliterators?
@criticalhitwargaming5290 Жыл бұрын
Only out of an airbrush, unfortunately. Such is the curse of metallic paints. You can pick up a basic airbrush and compressor from Amazon for £45, that's all I use for basecoating models.
@martinwright4063 Жыл бұрын
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 Would it work on Helbrutes, Venom Crawlers, and Forgefiends? Those CSM vehicles aren't too flat for contrast?
@criticalhitwargaming5290 Жыл бұрын
@martinwright4063 You might just get away with a hellbrute, but it won't go on a Venomcrawler or Forgefiend. I mean obviously the paint will physically go on it if you put it on there, but it doesn't dry nice and smooth, it dries with brush streaks and dark lines all over it. The maximum area you can apply contrast without this happening is about 1cm squared. Anything bigger, and it needs to be an airbrush really. Like I said, they're super cheap off Amazon if you just need one for basecoating stuff.
@martinwright4063 Жыл бұрын
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 Appreciate it. How much do you thin it in the airbrush? Still 1:1 with the contrast medium, but how much thinner do you add on top of it.

Great video, but on contrast step I failed. I can apply that smooth and even. It seems I'll stick with my night lord scheme using regular paints and freeze project Alpharius project =\ . Maybe I will try again after some months but now all inspirations is lost(
@criticalhitwargaming52902 жыл бұрын
I'll assume you meant you can't apply it smooth and even - to fix that, make sure you have plenty on your brush. Contrast paint requires one thick layer, you'll notice in the video I never go over the same spot I've already painted and I always have plenty on my brush. Otherwise it goes thin and streaky. Give it a bit of practice and you'll be away! I also have a Night Lords tutorial on the channel, you can get them done pretty quickly too.
@0Nakkiel02 жыл бұрын
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 thank you! I'll try to finish this test model later and apply satin varnish to see how it will look after it. If ok, I'll try once more on special model with some nice conversions that I planned. As for the NL - I managed to make for my self pretty solid color scheme that forgive mistakes (paintin something over this contrast areas now will be in my nightmares). But yes, it takes a lot of time to main my scheme and it's heavily depends on old Nuln oil, so I already bought myself 10 pots. Hope that will be enough for rest of my life)

Would contrast medium help with the streaks you get from contrast?
@criticalhitwargaming52903 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Contrast Medium weakens the colour by diluting it and spreading out the pigment, so it may go on slightly smoother at the expense of the intensity of the colour.

@@malyxxplays7949 If you watch when I paint the contrast on, I never paint over the same area with more than one or two strokes. That's when it starts to streak. You also need to have a fair amount of contrast paint on your brush compared to regular paint.
