Excellent explanation of how these two techniques work. I'd like to see you teach people some different sweep licks...some that use 6 strings and others that use less. For me, 3-string sweeps are easy. 4-string sweeps are pretty doable. 5 and 6 become strangely more difficult. Maybe you can show me (us) some tips for cleaning up the 5 and 6 string sweeps.

When I've started playing guitar (15 years ago), I went the economy picking rout. But after 10 years of practice I didn't get any better or faster. It hast to click, if you understand what I'm trying to say. The problem was, that at a faster tempo I was thrown off when I had to change strings. Also If you don't mute the strings properly they will ring out. All these problems went away when I switched to alternate picking.

To me economy picking comes naturally and I can play at a faster tempo when I use economy/directional picking instead of alterate picking. Alternate picking has more attack and aggression though.

I just can´t find a thing that motivates me to learn alternate picking. My economy picking works. And the onlyst song where i needed alternate picking until now was fade to black, the clean part by Hammett, after the first solo... And that´s so slow that you don´t need to practice it a lot. Is here anybody who can give me a cool example for a song where you definitly have to use alternate picking instead of economy for a good reason??
@douglasnisbet11893 жыл бұрын
I really wouldn't say Gus plays particularly fast, or particularly clean. For that I'd listen to someone like Rick Graham or Anton Oparin. Gus is moderate speed at best.

I've always used economy picking since it's the most natural way for me as a fast player. However when I encounter something like 5 notes over 2 strings that is meant to be played with alternate picking strictly I get totally lost. Some stuff I just can't play even though I played guitar every day the last 20 years. I'm a lazy player when it comes to specific rules I know. But now I have a really hard time learning to play stuff it's meant to be played. Here's one example. The top gun anthem. The part between 3:01 to 3:06 I simply cant play. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXrUZqtuYrZ_Y9E Any suggestions on specific exercises to start handling strictly alternate picking between strings where the first time on one string you start with an upstroke and the second time moving to that string starting with a downstroke and vice verse?
@stanislavmigra5 жыл бұрын
There is Steve Vai solution to this ... play it twice, so you have 10 notes over 2 strings, so it is even number and your alternate picking world is saved :D
@mridulm892 жыл бұрын
I use directional picking i.e. sweep picking combined with alternate picking i.e. when changing string if you are going down you down pick and when you are coming up you up pick and then you alternate pick on that particular string

If you switch from alternate picking to economy picking when alternate picking and economy picking are no longer the same, why call it alternate picking? Alternate picking means picking up when you go down a string and picking down when you go up a string. So that means first jumping over the string, then hitting it from the opposite end. It costs you an additional motion. I have never heard a convincing argument why avoiding hitting the string you want to pick by jumping over it, then hitting it from the opposite direction has an advantage.
