Right on, Ross. IIRC, Sir Jackie Stewart says the second most difficult thing to learn is when to start braking, but the most difficult is how much and when to let off the brake pedal. I always feel like I'm just trying to save my own life when I trail brake. Need way more practice, and I'm 68 years old with 20 years track experience. Whew, cobwebby!

I'm a CDI for GPRPCA and I instruct my students to develop a feel for a braking pt vs 'I MUST brake at marker X'. You learn where to brake based on how much speed you're carrying into the brake zone. If you had to give a lift, you don't want to use your normal brake pt since you're carrying less speed. Or maybe you hit the exit of the previous corner perfect and are going faster down the straight. There has to be a feel for when to brake for that particular lap and you adjust accordingly.

This is the most important skill to master to reduce lap times and gain consistancy. Good advice coach! Ed Zabinski, Level 5 Driver development

Ross, I really enjoy your podcasts and the newsletter. I wish I could have accessed information like you provide to race drivers. I really like that you talk to the "average" guy. We are not pros. The pros do not subscribe to your products (some should). I am still involved in racing but more with parts. It still does not cease to amaze me how racers, new or seasoned, still try to find that magic set up or the magic engine builder while they could knock off several seconds by learning how to RACE a car like you show on speedsecrets.com

I'm stunned. I think you said this same exact thing on June 11, 2017 at a Hooked on Driving day I attended at Laguna Seca. Hearing it again reminds me again how important it will be to focus this detail down on my next track day. Another thing I remember was when you said to practice what you are *trying* to do, so if you're too scared to late brake at full speed into turn 2, fine, lift on the straight, but at least get back on full throttle just before you get to the braking zone. I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but I just posted a session from that day - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnrFeqath62Khrc Thanks Ross!
