AND also the License plate indicates it was licensed in California in early-mid 1973 (as indicated by the G starting the letters) . Those are nifty plates! More that worth the T-shirt! My sister had a '74 Super Beetle in that orange. Great original color!

Whatever you do save the vacuum advance distributor. I have rebuilt several. People loved to tear those out and put a centrifical Bosch 009 distrubtor and they never run right. If you can get it back to original and bring the chirp back then you know you have it dialed. Also there is a flap system in the air housing that is attached by a rod to a thermostat below the right side of the block. This is what allowes the engine to warm up. Most of the time people ripped those out because if they go bad the engine gets hot and will seize up if that thermostat fails. People always complained they had no heat because people tore all that stuff out because you had to change that thermostat regularly to protect the engine.

After the throttle linkage came apart I once rode 5 miles on the rear bumper of a bug while my friend drove and I operated the throttle, because it beat walking that far! (Couldn't pick up a cell phone for a "Hey Dad" in 1982). Back in the day it was easy to get a brand new floor pan for an old bug, but I don't know if that is still true.

Jack, I am a younger granny of 68 years old and in 1972 I got my first car and even though I am a girl my Dad taught me how to change the tire, tune up the engine, disassemble clean and reassemble my carburetor and fuel pump. Later on I learned how to remove and replace the brake master cylinder in a Kharman Ghia. Oh yeah! My first car was a 1967 VW Beetle. Dark blue and I miss it.

You knew that battery wasn't going to stay in there FOREVER, Jack !!! . . . but I loved seeing you smile so much today - that's what being a kid is all about. ALSO, those sunroof bugs are fairly rare - keep it and put some metal over the holes in the floor, get a way to start it and turn it off and you can ride it around the farm. ( just don't make a KZbin video of it, like you said - we'll believe you !!! )

I wish I could give this video more than just one like! It's awesome that you got the bug running. I absolutely burst out laughing when Jack popped the hood and it was full of pack rat debris and Kent said he and AJ were going to play with the RC car. And then I just about completely lost it when you were whooping and hollering and the battery came falling out! Not sure if it would be worth the effort to replace the floor pans and stuff in it or if it would be better as a donor car for some of your other bugs. Whatever you decide to do with it, you at least got a cheap project car & some really fun video content

I remember when the sun roof first came out..a great option until Automakers as well as owners soon found out they leak..The fix came when Auto makers decided to engineer them with a drip pan underneath the sun roof with a hose connection and they ran the hose through the C pillar and out through the trunk..draining any leakage..problem solved..I don't remember when that change was made..I believe it was first used in Japanese made cars then other automakers followed
