Over 50 vintage railroad “Speeders’ visited the historic Tamaqua Railroad Station Saturday morning, April 1, 2017 as part of a daylong tour of the Reading and Northern Railroad. The 50 vintage Speeder cars and their owners are part of an organization that collects and restores these vintage self propelled former maintenance rail cars.
The organization is known as NARCOA - North American Rail Car Operators Association. Members are from all over the northeast United States and get together several times a year to tour different railroads in the country. This was their second visit to Tamaqua and the Reading and Northern Railroad. The multi-colored, restored railcars represent many different railroads and are painted in authentic colors and livery from the different railroads they originated on.
While in Tamaqua for only a short while on Saturday, they manually picked up and turned each of the Speeder cars that are coming in from the north at Jim Thorpe in the morning. After the short layover in Tamaqua and when the cars were all turned around, the Speeders continued the next leg of their day long trip, heading towards again towards McAdoo, and points further north and west of Tamaqua.
Rail riders will had a chance to take a break and visit the Tamaqua Station during their visit. The Tamaqua Station Restaurant was open to accommodate them, as well as the Station Creamery, and Station Sports and Gift Shop.
It was a very colorful and nostalgic sight to see all these vintage Speeder cars lined up near the Tamaqua Station and was a great opportunity for photographs.
