Things We Hate About the 2022 Honda Civic Si

The 2022 Honda Civic Si is an amazing new car. However, there are a few things about it that we find annoying. First and foremost, US models of this car should come with fog lights, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel just like our friends in Canada get.
The infotainment system is relatively slow to boot up. What should take a matter of seconds often takes up to 45 seconds for CarPlay to activate and sync with your mobile phone.
The rear brake light impedes the vision looking out the center of the rear window. Having the lamp mounted elsewhere would have eliminated this issue.
The 2022 Civic Si doesn't have a ton of natural engine compression braking. When leaving off the gas, I'm used to a manual transmission automatically slowing down. This car carries alot of speed even when downshifting.
I dislike electric parking brakes. On a sporty car like this, having an old-school manual transmission should also provide the ability to have an old-school mechanical parking brake.
Finally, and most annoying is the fact that US models of the Civic Si come with neither a spare tire or a jack. This is a huge over site....especially when our car suffered two wheels/tires not being able to hold air due to a sticker on the tire not allowing the bead to be totally sealed!

As a 10th gen owner and purely my opinion but there is nothing about the 11th gen I like better. I don’t prefer the styling. It lost the full digital dash Lost the adaptive dampers Lost the foglights Lost the heated seats Lost the dual zone climate control I don’t like how the center display sticks up, I prefer the lower mounted in dash screen on 10th gen. Added “fake” engine noise in the cabin Added automatic rev matching I’ve got a ‘17 so it also lacks all the driver assist stuff and is much more of a raw machine and closer to what driving a manual or really any car was like from the last couple decades. At least the Si is still manual only and compared to the new WRX It’s a prince.

I have a 2023 Civic Si and the engine braking is there. You have to induce it. I have the Rev Match feature turned off. I rev match downshift, let the car coast a bit in the hill, so it is gaining some speed. THEN I step on the brake pedal and bring the speed down enough, let's say 5 MPH below speed limit. I release the brake pedal, now my car is engine braking down the very steep hill. It gains only a little of speed but then it gets to a point where it maintains it. I have a long steep hill near me with a posted speed limit of 25 MPH. After doing the procedure I described above, downshifting from third to second gear, etc. My car maintains 22 MPH down the hill. It's funny watching the other drivers tailgating me and riding their brakes. I am not even stepping on my brakes. I guess they don't know how to use the manual mode in their automatic transmission vehicle LOL! If I didn't induce the engine braking with my car. My vehicle can bomb down the hill in second gear without me giving any input. It can go up to the low 30 MPH range. I am familiar that engine braking should happen when you downshift the vehicle but I believe that it doesn't happen because of government regulations. It happens with my brother's 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport with the CVT and paddle shifters. Even though he is in second, his vehicle keeps gaining speed. He also has to step on the brakes for a moment so his vehicle can maintain speed instead of gaining it. The hump of the brakelight is not an issue for me. Due to the the rear camera. Believe it or not I still turn ny head and look all over the place as I back up while using the view of the rear camera. Hell! Not even the Si's lip spoiler hinders my view. No spare tire? People should actually explore the vehicle before purchasing it. I knew it didn't come with a spare when I purchase the car because I checked to see if it came with it on the day of purchasing the vehicle. Also, most folks don't even inflate their spare tire to maintain it. Nor do they buy a new spare tire when it comes to changing the old one out. Soooo.... What's the point of a spare tire if you just forget about it when it comes to maintaining it?

Any trim level over LX should come with fog lights from the factory, period... Honestly I wouldn't even complain if my Sport came with a wiring harness that was "plug and play" to add them afterwards. But no, I have to make my own harness to wire them myself 🤨

My 2008 Honda Civic EX had a Flat. Well I thought I would just call the Tow Truck to take me to the Tire shop without me changing out the Donut. Well I waited and waited and later found out that the Tow Truck also had a Flat which is why he wasn't coming. It only took me minutes to install the Spare and went to the Tire shop. I had a '15 Elantra Sport that came with no spare, but Hyundai did have a a factory spare tire kit. The kit was like $150 and I also had to purchase a donut tire and have it mounted. Another thing; Because of your SI having a Limited Slip Differential if you did have a spare you can't put the donut on the front of the vehicle (the donuts are usually a smaller diameter than the car's tires which is what will damage the LSD...Maybe part of Honda's reasoning for skipping the spare). You have to remove a rear tire, put the donut on the rear and then put that rear full size tire on the front. If you don't do this you can mess up the LSD. I had a front go flat on my '07 SI and had to do this. Luckily I'm in the minority of people who read the manual and had come across this little tidbit. What really makes no sense is that my son's 2020 Civic Sport Hatch and my wife's 2022 Sport Sedan came with spare, a jack, and all the normal bits for changing a flat. So why not include a spare?????

I spoke with my service manager at my Honda dealer when I bought my SI, who I trust, and he explained that the civic SI has slightly larger brake rotors than other civics. If you're coasting in gear, pay attention the live consumption bar, you'll notice that it goes down to zero. It's a technique to seriously improve consumption by maximizing on the cars ability to use no gas while rolling along in gear... I don't a agree about the spare tires, but I do love my Honda jack on the 10th Gen. On a track day, I was able completely lift up the side of the car and do front-to-rear tire rotation. What's cool, it weights about 1lbs, so it comes with me for track days, but the spare tire stay in the shed.

I was thinking about a Civic Si. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one locally or within a reasonable driving distance. Fortunately, I was steered into the direction of an VW GTI. For what comes standard on the GTI vs Si, I believe I got a better deal with the 2023 GTI-S. The GTI’s infotainment system isn’t as bad as reviewers say. I was able to be comfortable with the controls (or lack their of) within the first few rides. Your positive and negative videos prove to me I bought the car for me. Even without driving an Si. I traded in my 21 Mustang GT Premium for the 23 GTI-S. Not because of fuel economy. I believe in Smiles Per Gallon not MPG. I wanted a more engaging driving experience and practically when need (riding my dog or the rare time of riding with the wifey and two kids). 🤘

What’s the thing about the gas door. Is it really just a push in gas door without a cap? I would think the car doesn’t slow down when downshifting because of the turbocharger. If it was a naturally aspirated engine like a Nissan z. It would slow down. This car, I would think you need to be aggressive with the shifter because it’s only 200 hp with 6 speed transmission. The gears are very short.
