The prudishness of America is outstanding. For years I was involved in competitive swimming, competitive diving, and water polo. Speedo was what worn. Every swimmer, male and female wore either a Speedo or an Arena suit.

Where I come from, a Nazicatholic country 🇪🇸 at the time, wearing Speedos would have branded you as a faggot, the equivalent of being branded a communist in USA 🇺🇸 in the 1950s. That said, young men wore pants two sizes smaller (think bullfighter) and their bulge was hard to ignore; not like today when they wear pants two sizes too big which defy the law of gravity.

As an active swimmer, I always wear a speedo at the pool and so do many other people. Swimming in board shorts causes too much drag. Not sure why it would be offensive to wear one! Geez!

Guys, here in Europe no one would ever watch twice if you wear those. So it it is totally normal. It might also come from the fact, that we don't have so many beaches (mostly on lakes) but rather pools (many inside) where the professional swimmers use to practice. And them always wear Speedos because these big shorts are far too slow.
