Everyone: 2 + 2 = 4 Scott: 2+2 is a complicated question and has a multitude of ways to find the answer. You should start by defining why you want to put 2 and 2 together, then maybe in a few hours after much deliberation we can ask the question again.

What I use for speedpainting ASOIAF miniatures, as painting 12 of the same model can feel like a chore: 1. zenithal prime with brown, so you don't have to paint purses, boots, etc. 2. airbrush what you can, like cloaks 3. bright base colors, because color will be tinted later on 4. couple of highlights on the upper part of the model 5. gloss varnish so that the washes go into recesses better 6. wash with 50 % citadel 50 % glaze medium, so that the washes are not too strong 7. matt varnish You're ready play. Later on, you can retouch the models with more highlights. 90 % of this comes from LazyPainter aka Dmitry Bodnadov.

What i find myself doing while painting is continuously experimenting, which caused my paint job to take longer than my friends in my flgs. Nothing wrong with that. I noticed that my friends who can really dish out an army in short amount of time are people who are very objective and systematic in their paint jobs. I think the term "speed painting" is different from one person to another.

I love the idea of starting with the important model ... I usually test out on a least important model but aiming high for the test is beautiful. One thing I will say about many variations of slap chop is they can almost all be a good baseline that is playable, but can still be brought up to a higher standard with work later. I will say, if you do slap chop with the intent to play and come back later, 1) varnish your minis before you play and 2) wash the minis (just a light rinse in warm soapy water should be enough) before you start painting again.

I too have been there, I watched every vid I could on speed painting as I was trying to avoid starting the process on my Mantic Ogres. And then I see your vids and suddenly it’s like, hey man….just do it. And then I look at my minis and start painting. My first mini always takes ages…it’s working out the colours and the order they go on, the next mini takes half the time, then I work out the quickest way to paint and how much detail to add to the various areas. At the end the last looks ‘almost; as good as the first and suddenly a coherent army takes the table. Thank you Mr. Scott……you are the man!

As someone who almost never thinks about his paint schemes and then just hopes it works out along the way... This was actually a cool interesting concept to add more meaning and interest than my standard "I'm using purple and green because those colors are cool" thought process. I am going to use your test model and play around in a single model Idea on my next project! Thanks for the explanation as to why you make the choices you do, it adds great context. I feel like ever since you've started to play more games or be more vocal about playing games on your channel your painting videos have had so much more excitement and joy and them and that speaks volumes for how important it is to play more games with our little toy soldiers. I appreciate this video, because as a newb painter, I compare my painting to what some KZbinrs make you feel is the standard speed. I tend to paint slow as well. I'm a perfectionist and it takes me around 20 hours to finish ONE Troop model from 40k. I started with Chaos Marines, which seem to be way more ornate than regular Space Marines. I feel like I could master a Space Marine if I painted one, so the extra difficulty isn't too bad. But I make sure every part is painted perfect with no mistakes - even areas where absolutely no one will notice or even look. I'm starting to realize that I need to ease up on the effort or switch up my technique if I ever want to get my army finished. I started basing in a quick and sloppy fashion because I'll be painting over the mistakes anyway, so who cares about being careful. Things like that. 90% is just getting the paint on in the right places, the last 10% can be fine tuning or correcting mistakes. That seems to help speed up the process for me.

I speedpainted 30 bestigors in about 6-7 hours, looks great and the result comes fast. my number one tip when speed painting: paint the first layers "sloppy" and dont focus to much on hitting the colour perfect and paint all models at the same time with 1 colour on all models then change colour and so on. Don't overthink how you want to paint. Come prepared and use 1 shade thats nice on the whole model in the end to take away all the little mistakes on the way. Use a quick drybrush effect on all models in the end and you are done my friend. painting quick is a process aswell as painting slow. It's a practice you must train to become decent at.

This video is great. The action in transitions makes for a more enjoyable watch, makes me feel more engaged in what you're putting in front of us. The transitions were awesome, I love the book separating the "chapers" of the video. This is probably one of the most engaging videos you've done, I think you've hit a new high in your video creation. All that aside, the process here is very user friendly, and I'll take all this to heart! Thanks Scott!

I watched the video and thought: isn't it interesting how different we all are with our minipainting? Like I personally hate to plan or follow a structure, I just paint and if shit happens it happens, might as well adjust on the fly. Whenever I have a structure I get massive painters block. That's also why I can't do comissions. At the same time this kinda also means I will never reach your level of cinematography (youtube...ography?) because I do the same thing with videos...I just wing it and plan nothing 🤣 I feel like while the approach works super good for minipainting but not so much for videos. What I am trying to say is: Amazing video! Always blown away by your shooting, editing and storytelling.

Fwiw, all of my display models don't have much of a painting plan because they exist in a vacuum. Don't need to look good next to any other models. The extent of my plan is similar to that of my initial test model. I know 1-2 main colors I'd like to represent and then I work it out. Appreciate the kind words, Chris!

I think this was a great critique of the 'Speed painting' video and a good methodology video. The only thing I would add, is that it seems to me that if you painting a ton of minis a similar/identical scheme you might want to have a book where you write down how to do it. I'm not a wargamer, but that seems pretty handy to me.

I use Microsoft OneNote for this. It's digital, so I can't lose it, I can add pictures of what each effect looks like, idea images, and a full recipe for each step of the process in army painting. Maybe it's harder since you're an Uber painter and future golden demon winner, but for me it's about finding a sane method that doesn't take too long to get a unit done. The issue is that your channel mainly focuses on display painting when most of us are painting multiples

15:53 "We gonna have to take some evasive maneuvers." Imagine after these words Scott just runs off the screen and video ends. 😄

I agree, especially about taking the time when you are enjoying the process. But I kinda wish I could impart some of my speed into you. I average 3 hours per minis, ranging from 5 hours at the top end and 30 minis for real rank and file. That includes assembly, basing, priming and varnish which accounts for around 40 minutes on average.

I love the idea of doing the same thing 3 different ways and then chosing the optimal version to apply to the army. Also maybe kind of obvious, but I like the idea to take the commander as your first model. If it turns out a bit different - it's okay for that model to stand out a bit. I always took a simplest of troops to try the paint scheme.
