🧀CHEESY STORE is live! zilla.club/collections/jccbm 🧀The CHEESY STORE is finally up and running!🧀It's quite new and there's only a couple products, but we'll be adding more stuff periodically
Last time we learned the Yiddish alphabet (based on the Hebrew alphabet, or abjad) and a couple of extremely useful phrases about different zoo animals in Madrid. This time, we're up for a bigger challenge with more difficult sentences and words, but always keeping that Duolingo zing with funny phrases, naughty references and being absolutely roasted to oblivion. It was an extremely fun one, and not a very difficult one since it shares many similarities with German and English, as well as other languages like Polish. At the end, we spun the roulette and unveiled the next Boss in the lineup. It's going to be a hard one, guaranteed.

As a yiddish speaker, this is quite fun! Of course Duolingo does not use standard yiddish from YIVO, it uses the American Hasidic pronounciation, although the writing is the same. For an example, "gut" is always "gut" (but hasidic says "git", as well as polish yiddish speakers or southern dialect speakers), this is quite a mess, but I love it! Thank you for reminding me my childhood haha

Fun fact, the way words are spelled in Yiddish works slightly differently from Hebrew. However, words derived from Hebrew maintain their original spelling so that's where some of the confusion around the spelling of words such as חבר comes from.

I wonder where this double negation comes from. Neither German nor hebrew has it,
@jccbm
@jccbm Жыл бұрын
I'm also curious. I do know Afrikaans has some level of double negation too, even though Dutch doesn't (double "nie" as in "Ek eet nie kaas nie") so there's probably some reasoning behind it, even though that one reminds me a bit more of french with the "ne + pa" combo

Semetic languages work off of a so called root system,basicly,you have three base letters,and that have a meaning,and then you build around them,for exemple k-t-b in arabic and hebrew is the root with the meaning of ,,writing",so ,,I wrote" in arabic is ,,katabtu" and ,,kātabti" in hebrew,and because the root system makes predictable patterns,the short vowels aren't written,just the long vowels,this creates the ,,ghost vowels" you were talking about
@jccbm
@jccbm Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation! Yes, I can imagine how, with some experience, it becomes quite managable and easy to recognize the patterns. It is kinda wild the first time you stumble into the idea of "vowels are not there, you just know" though 🤣

@@jccbm the thing is,both the arabic and hebrew scripts are made for semetic languages,Yiddish is a germanic language,with completly different grammar,interestingly,it seems the vowels actually changed in such a way that they work better with the script

I think the reason that you're taking a long time is because you take too much time talking. A speedrun can be easily butchered by common distractions like the live stream chat. Once you get the next language, just focus on the Duolingo. Even if it starts to get boring. You can still say thoughts out loud to help you remember; I don't think that was one of the reasons you took so long. Good luck on the next speedrun!
@jccbm
@jccbm Жыл бұрын
There's plenty of reasons, that's definitely one of them. I can tell you that all of the last 10~ languages were done in a very short span of time, so you can expect extremely high levels of exhaustion an distraction. "Speedrun" has stopped being a very accurate identifier since some time ago ☠️
