License plates are a fantastic way to learn as well. When you're out and about, take notice of the cars you pass by and try to match the letters to the words. Like learning a new language, repetition and everyday usage is a great way to memorize. I taught myself the whole phonetic alphabet through my embarrassing amount of Uber eats orders during Uni lol.
@lifeisnowinsessionАй бұрын
This is a great idea. I know the whole alphabet, but when I have to use it on the radio, my mind suddenly goes blank, and I forget it. Weirdly, I always notice license plates, so this will be easy to do, and hopefully, it just becomes second nature to me.

My uncle was a squaddie. I learned all the phonetic, marching, shooting, basic soldiering by 13... I never even wanted to join the cadets, but he basically put me through his version of it instead.

The other method that works [well, did for me at any rate] is to sit down w pen and paper and write them over and over and over until they became ingrained. Now I can rattle off NATO code w/o a second thought. Oh, and it should be noted that, in addition to "M" and "N" being easily confused, the letter "S" often cannot be heard at all over the phone when spoken by itself.

November India Charlie Echo. Thank you; I've always had trouble with this for some reason, but using your method I was able to memorize about half of the alphabet before reaching the end of the video. Brilliant. Cheers!

@onbearfeetАй бұрын
@@Oilupplz I used it for years as a teacher, actually. I got tired of reading off standardized test answers and being asked, "Did you say B or D on question 37?" Because I grew up in a military family, I knew about the phonetic alphabet, so I started saying Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta instead of ABCD. The students got into it, trying to one-up me by finding ever funnier words to swap in for my "boring" ones without losing clarity. By the end of the semester, they were using both the official alphabet and their homebrew ones to read off alphanumeric sequences (usually things like wifi passwords). I didn't encourage any of them to join the military (my grandfather was career Army and would have been the first to tell them to steer clear), just to think a little outside the box and look for solutions instead of putting up with problems.

You said ZED as a maritimer now in Texas I loved to hear that!!!! Outstanding educational content!!!

Same, i’m from Australia! I’m literally so surprised to hear someone to say “ZED” instead of “ZEE”!!

Here’s a really easy way: read license plates. Do that throughout the day and you’ll master it in no time

It’s helpful, though in the US at least most highway patrol and law enforcement agencies use their own phonetic alphabet 😢

Thanks! I just learned that by repeating it over and over. I cannot believe it was this simple all along ❤

That's no fun. Try this instead: A - Aisle B - Bdelium C - Czar D - Djakarata E - Euphoria F - Five G - Genre H - Hour I - Ian J - Jose K - Knight L - LLama M - Mnemonic N - Nine O - Oedipal P - Phonetic Q - Queue R - Rwanda S - Sea T - Tsar U - Urn V - Vie W - Wrong X - Xanadu Y - You Z - Zero
Minor nitpick, but "Quebec" is pronounced "Keh-beck", not "Kweh-beck". The numerals ("wun", "too", "tree", "fower", "fife", "sicks", "seven", "ate", "niner", "zeerow") would have been a nice addition.
@gazzabethyname Жыл бұрын
I've only known people to pronounce it as Kweh beck.
@rherydrevins Жыл бұрын
@@gazzabethyname *shrug*, I don't make the rules; ICAO and FAA spell it "keh-beck".
@ObeyCamp5 ай бұрын
@@gazzabethyname That's how the country is pronounced, but in the NATO phonetic alphabet it's pronounced slightly differently as this phonetic alphabet is designed to make things as audibly dissimilar and recognizable as possible. Several of the numbers are also pronounced in a way almost nobody pronounces them, but it makes them uniquely recognizable over a radio or phone.
@sylversyrfer68944 ай бұрын
It’s true - Quebec is properly pronounced “keh-bek” by citizens of that province. Time for an update for Q in the NATO alphabet.
