One of the first things I was taught as a kid when defending (I was at LB, RB, LM, RM) - Never go to ground unnecessarily. First scene Spencer was in - committed and slid to block a cross that never came nor did he need to with plenty support around. If you don't know the basics, I really shouldn't be playing yourself in that position; in addition, you're position and awareness (in that position) is hard to watch. The only real time you need to slide tackle is to either block a shot (you know is coming) you're slightly behind on, possibly to stop the ball going out for a corner that you mightn't otherwise reach or to intercept a player running AT you; even then I'd be reluctant - I'd rather jockey them and force a direction then tackle. In your case, he was down your right side - you're more effective if you can force him out wide.
