Anyway, a week later I was riding my bike down the sidewalk (I was 8 so the road wasn’t an option) and this guy had parked his car in the middle of the sidewalk. I was talking with my friend, and I didn’t see the car until I was probably 10 feet away, and we were going pretty quick. I managed to almost stop, but I gently tapped his car, lighter than if it was my finger, and he told me to get out and not come near his house again. He said if I did he would rip my bike to pieces and run it over with his car. Most scary thing that ever happened to me other than a car accident and breaking my arm.

No kid develops an emotional attachment to a bike on the first day, especially when it's a $60 bike from Walmart that's heavy as fuck. Hell.. There aren't that many BMX riders that develop an attachment to any of their bikes, they throw them around, beat them to hell, bail off on them and replace them every few months. The only time someone will be attached is if they won their first X Games event on the bike.

I know plenty of bmx riders (professional and hobbyists) who have attachments to their bikes... I'm one of them. In my experience, the only people who haven't really cared about their wheels are kids who either haven't learned to appreciate what they have, or people who know their bike is crap and treat it as such. Specific parts, like grips, pedals, and tires you might find it hard to become attached to, but those wear out and are easily replaced with identical components. Your gross analogies are pretty much just sidestepping everyone's opinions and replacing them with your own outlook. Sentimental attachments can be formed in an instant or over a period of time, not just one or the other. I agree with the idea that, if the bike was a present, the kid would hold SOME form of sentiment for it from the moment it was gifted. It was HIS bike. Needless to say, that value was clearly overrode when he realized he was getting a fancy-shmancy Sunday complete. Now he has a better bike.
