Your Royal was made by Silver Seiko in Japan, they made other nice portables like the popular Royal Mercury. I think they are one of the best ultra-portables.

Update on my typewriter situation. I grabbed that word processor typewriter for 5 bucks. I like it, but the price of the ribbons, and the printwheel that needs replacing and is tricky to find, is kind of expensive. While getting some chairs out of my Aunts attic, I found my Grandfathers typewriter. It's a 1950s Remington Quiet-Riter. After a day of cleaning and adjusting, I now have a proper mechanical typewriter that I absolutely love using. I'm surprised the ribbon it has still works, but it needs a new one, and it costs way less to replace it than the one-time use ribbon on that word processor.

This was fun! We grew up with an old Royal KGM Standard typewriter on a table in our playroom. This was a big desk typewriter from the late '40s. It was built like a truck. I was fascinated inspecting and learning about all the mechanisms. Earlier this year I decided I wanted to recover the touch-typing skill that I lost over Christmas break when I wad taking the class in high school. I tried to use the keyboard on my computer or other computer keyboards I have around here, but they just didn't feel right. So I got a couple of old Royal manual typewriters not unlike the ones I initially learned the skill on. I found one just a few years older than the one we grew up with and a how-to booklet from Royal from about the same time and within a couple of days I had fully recovered the skill I lost many decades ago. I just love a manual typewriter. I've always been a bit intimidated by the electric ones. I'd like to recommend that you learn to touch-type. It's not hard but it does require a bit of concentration, especially in the beginning. You mostly have to get your hands on the correct starting keys and then practice, practice, practice. Computer keyboards have little nubs on the "F" and "J" keys where you're supposed to put your index fingers, but typewriters never had those and I remember people getting frustrated when they got their fingers placed wrong and found what they typed was nonsense. Touch-typing will give you that "musical" regular rhythm you talk about. Just remember when you're practicing that accuracy is everything. Speed will come, especially after you further develop your muscle memory. It can feel like magic when you find yourself hitting the right keys almost without thinking about it. I do still use the hunt-and-peck style that I developed after I lost my touch-typing skill and I actually got really fast using it, but I ALWAYS have to be able to watch the keyboard. There are a lot of good channels here about typewriters.

I use a VERY old TRS-80 Model 100 when I need to take notes or write something distraction-free. It's a VERY old laptop (laptop is generous, it's basically a slab) and literally all it can do is word processing. You want another application, you're programming it yourself. I like it because it is just as distraction-free as a typewriter is, but if I need to get what I've written onto a modern computer, either just to save it or to edit, etc, I can connect it to my modern computer via a serial cable to get my documents off of it.

THIS is... wow \o/ but there is some truth to it, our old coffee machine had given up and a few days later i found a dirty one a few streets from our house that someone had put there with the inscription free. i cleaned it and what can i say, it has been running perfectly for many years... it was exactly the same with my typewriter. i really wanted an old one. a really old one and was looking for it at our flea market. and then i found this old adler machine from 1944 in black, i love black. the old lady selling it asked me if i wanted it and i said: how much should it cost? she looked at me and said, you know it's expensive and i nodded. end of story, she sold me this perfectly working typewriter for 5 dollars. i was speechless.

I am 42 and we had a Typewriter at home, not a fancy one. I used this machine to write some Stuff for School and i also spent months Reproducing a Script from my Memory of the movie Terminator 2 that i have watched on VHS several times before. Its fascinating how much you can remember of a movie, even the dialogs and details. Happy for your find and wish you lots of fun on this beautiful machine

You got too inspired from Nicholas Grafola ( looks , beard , the way of talking , the pause in speech , long hairs , and your old video intros which is here we talk about simple living 🙃) and your obvio minimalism vibe but we still love it , DESERVE A SUBSCRIBE ❤

Thats too cool. I have been thinking about getting a typewriter recently. There's one for sale in my area, which is a digital word processor with a built-in printer. I need to snag it before someone else does, but I would rather get a mechanical typewriter.

Yeah I think the mechanical one is a good move just because there are no electronics to fail. That sounds neat though!

I love this, you’ve inspired me to choose less tech smart options which in our world feels almost sacrilegious or something. So I’m grateful to have you as an example of someone who is making those choices and happier for it. And I love the spirited man as well.

Really cool, but where do you get the ink ribbons for it? Do they still make those?

That thing looks neat! It looks like you can sit up to it and just feel inspired to start writing. Always having access to a notepad on our computers or phones honestly takes away from the magic of beginning something like creative writing. It also reminds of how we consume vinyl records. Obviously it's not as convenient as pressing play on our phones, but the fact that there is a bit of preparation needed just makes us appreciate music just a little bit more!

I’m 28 and I remember in middle school I used a type writer to write an actually essay for class, might have been history. Didn’t have a laptop or computer. Loved the experience but man oh man when you pressed backspace it would delete the whole line XD def made it more difficult but still enjoyed it. Plus everyone thought the font looked cool

That is so cool, that you found the night vision case. Van is an inspiration and It's pretty obvious to me that you would like him. For me you are just Van without the visuals and more talking ( this is to be understood in the nicest way possible).

I love typewriters, my grandmother typed her letters to my kom after they moved 3 hours away, of course long distance calling was too expensive. Where do you find ribbon for it?

My favorite thing about typewriters is how much they look like whatever time period they were made in. 60s and 50s ones look just like fridges and cars at the time for instance 😂

I heard someone say that typewriters are a technology that will never be made again. We will always see mechanical watches or cars in the market. But with computers being as big as they are, there will likely never be another instance where typewriters will ever be mass produced ever again. So grab one from your local thrift store while you can!
