The National Railway Museum in York is free to enter, as are the City Walls. The historic sites cost a fortune to preserve & maintain, so it is fair enough to charge for people to visit, but it's not compulsory. One still gets to see it all without having to pay, unless you want to. You seem to not mind spending lots of money on eating & drinking, so it's your choice. Just as long as you enjoyed the City in your own way. Don't forget you don't get to visit these places very often, but the entry charges usually give you up to a year of repeat visits.

@@danielferguson3784 Of course, Daniel, that’s what I said - it makes sense why they charge an entry for most attractions. I was on a budget however and this is just my experience! Cheers :)
