You have a lot of opportunities to plant supertunias & grasses inside Janey. It's time to show off California's beautiful natives. Time to attract native birds and insects to your garden. Manzanitas, ceonothus, sages, sunflowers, buckwheat, ect, the list is endless!

I vote for the native plants will look so beautiful, and good morning garden lovers 😊🌻🌺🌸🍂🍁
@jessicacook8186 Жыл бұрын
I think the supertunias will be a lot of maintenance out there, with watering and fertilizing. Also, your road looks very natural and country. I don't think a monoculture of anything would fit in like a native planting would.

Natives mixed with grasses would be beautiful for the front garden😊
@barbaramccann7944 Жыл бұрын
Supertunias and grasses, here’s why: you have a LOT going on. Planting these two variety will give you a year or two of “hands-off” landscape, allowing you to focus on your other projects. In the meantime, you will have time to research/design the native garden, should you choose to move in that direction.

Good morning, please plant the natives. They are very necessary for wildlife survival. You have lots of space inside your property for the super tunica. Thanks 💚🌿

I'm in Florida 9b. My vote is for natives because they require little water or maintenance after established. Native grasses and ground covers are great because they keep down weeds and reduce the amount of mulch needed. They also help the native critters. I like to believe that keeps them off of my other plants! It is so exciting to follow your progress!
@Luna82545 Жыл бұрын
I'd go for both options in your front garden :) Natives the farthest away, and then mix in grass + supertunias to step in and take over closing up to your entrance. then you can switch colors for the annuals if you wish without having to change the entire length of the border
@kayjane2115 Жыл бұрын
Native wildflowers would be gorgeous, whimsical, and little to no maintenance! Can't wait to see what you do! Happy gardening 🌼

Natives outside the fence, for sure! They'll be super low maintenance AND responsible gardening to benefit the ecosystem. CA poppies will be gorgeous interspersed amongst the other natives.

Janey, you really need a couple of barn cats that live outdoors to keep the rodents, including squirrels and gophers, under control. We have 3 feral cats that adopted us and they have done an excellent job getting rid of rodents. We do give them a little cat food every day so they stick around when there are almost no rodents to hunt for. They are very tame now, but still love to hunt.

I vote for natives with grasses. Supertunias need so much attention and you are a super busy girl. Just wanted to share that I just got accepted into my Master Gardeners class here in Virginia. I was so inspired by you so I’m taking my gardening journey to the next level. ❤. I’ll start in January and so looking forward to it. Thanks Janey 😊

I like the idea of a native garden by the road with pockets of daffodils that would pop up in the spring. If you follow your other plan, you would have to add some type of watering system outside the fence.

@carolmacdonald8437 Жыл бұрын
Janey, you are vary creative and it's fun seeing your ideas! Sometimes, I think you would benefit from looking farther ahead, though. Daffodils would look great in your zigzag, but why not look farther ahead? If you put them in the orchard where they can naturalize, they'll be great, permanently, and looking better each year. If you put tulips in the zigzag, it'll be easier to protect them from the squirrels, so both plants win short-term and long-term. 😊

For the front area maybe you can do mostly native flowers /shrubs and some jazz berry at the front of the bed. Best of both worlds! Then if the poppy migrates under the fence to the front it will look really pretty with the natives.

I was originally going to vote for supertunias, but when you starting pulling out the daffodils I thought how beautiful it would be to have some of those out by the road along with other natives. Check out Yulia’s Y Garden , specifically how she has the strip between the road and sidewalk planted. She’s in New Jersey, but a similar idea with natives for your CA road garden would be beautiful.

Love all the bulb choices! I have a suggestion for your driveway gate. I know in your long-term plant y'all want to replace it, but in the meantime I think you'd be surprised at how much it would disappear and blend in if you painted the metal black. You can get what's called self-etching primer to get the paint to adhere to the chain link metal. Just an idea!
@donnasantamaria8317 Жыл бұрын
This is such a great idea. We have a section of chain link that is painted brown. So much more attrative than the grey steel unpainted color.

I like your native garden idea. Ceanothus are beautiful and come in groundcover to large shrub sizes. I grew california poppies last year and found out that they a actually short lived perennials. When the poppies get messy looking, instead of pulling them just cut them back and they regrow. You also have room for toyons, which my yard is too small to handle. The problem with California native wildflowers is that most of them are spring bloomers and or go summer dormant, so you would need the beauty of shrubs to make it look nice all year.
@tarasmith660 Жыл бұрын
Your signature plant is the supertunia bubblegum. I think it would be fitting to try it your 1st year in your garden. I’m sure it would slow down the traffic as it’s a show stopper in mass planting. Was thinking about your propane tank. I see it’s not moved yet and probably driving you crazy. I would paint it black like your fence so it fades into the background. Yes, you can paint them, my dad use to be a delivery man and he did paint old tanks. Regardless if moved or not being black would camouflage it! 😊

Hi Janey, I live in the country of Sonoma County and we have it all (gophers, moles, weasels, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, etc). In the past I would make the hardware mesh baskets for the bulbs and add the chicken wire on top of the soil to stop those rodents from digging out the bulbs. I’ve conceded to planting my tulip bulbs in containers. I love the development of your garden zones. Glad you’re feeling better.

Definitely natives! I love that whimsical look and it would be so unexpected near the side of the road. Also, the pollinators would be very happy and as someone else said, it would keep the critters busy and out of your yard! Natives because it's so helpful to the wildlife. Plus, that area will be seen by so many and can be used for educating the public on the importance of natives to our wildlife! Lynne here. Suggestion for the tulip/squirrel issue. In you landscape plant all the bulbs the squirrels don’t enjoy like your alliums and daffs. Then put tulips in pots using chicken wire. Easier to control and tulips in pots looks amazing. One more thing. Your place is massive so plant way more bulbs than you think you’ll want. Good luck.
