Spend Your Time with an Enlightened Guru - Ep 18 | Annamalai Swami

It is said that "You become like the people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely."
If this is the case, then the best choice you can make is to spend your time with an enlightened Guru who is free from all worries!
Of course, not all are fortunate enough to have the holy company of such a Guru. But at least we all can have the company of their books and videos containing their teachings.
Instead of wasting time on mundane activities and media entertainments, we can choose to study the life and teachings of great yogis and sages who attained freedom from all kinds of sufferings.
Their teachings will certainly help us in going beyond the illusions of this worldly existence.

On the importance of holy company, great Guru Sri Adi Shankaracharya mentioned a verse in his Bhaja Govindam:
"Satsangatve nissangatvam
nissangatve nirmohatvam,
nirmohatve nischalatattvam
nischalatattve jivanmuktih."
Meaning: Through the company of the wise Sage, there arises non-attachment; from non-attachment comes freedom from delusion; where there is freedom from delusion, there is abidance in Self-knowledge, which leads to freedom while alive.
It is in this context that we have created this video series under the title, "Spend Your Time with an Enlightened Guru".
This is episode 18 of this video series and it contains the teachings of enlightened master Sri Annamalai Swami. He explains why it is not helpful to enquire about the origin of Maya (illusion), and how it operates.
About Annamalai Swami:
Sri Annamalai Swami (1906 - 1995) was an enlightened Guru who lived in Tiruvannamalai, India. He was a disciple of the great sage Sri Ramana Maharishi.
He came to Bhagavan at the age of 22 and served him devotedly for many years. Through Bhagavan's grace and rigorous sādhana (spiritual practice), he realized the Truth about his existence.

Annamalai Swami was the architect of the Ramana ashram. Probably the devotee who was most close to the Master. There is a great book of him by David Godman. Highly recommended. Great soul.

The Supreme Self is the only reality and everything else has no existence. Then, where did Maya come from? What is it? What is the purpose of Maya? Just ponder over this...(something that came to me) In the beginning there was only this ONE, the Supreme Self. There was no one else, nothing else. This Supreme ONE got bored. It wanted to play some game but there was no one to play with. So, the ONE created an opponent - the MAYA. From His own Self, He created numerous beings. All these beings were clouded with Maya (illusion) and forgot they all came from the same source. The game is- the beings have to remember that all of them are one and came from the ONE. MAYA will do everything in its power to stop these beings from realizing it. Those beings who, in spite of the Maya's power are able to remember their source and realize who they are, will finish the game and return to the source. When all the beings in the universe finish the game, the game is over. The Supreme ONE, all the while, is greatly entertained by this game.
