In this video I hike up to the Sahale Glacier Camp, which is the highest campsite in the North Cascades National Park. I enjoy some beautiful sunset landscape photography before spending the night under the stars and photographing sunrise. I encounter a Bear on my hike, strong winds and a grueling climb to the campsite. This was one photography adventure I will never forget. The campaign I am helping to promote is the #FindYourPark and #PlacesNobodyKnows campaigns by the National Park Foundation.

It is amazing to think that this pass has been used by native americans for thousands of years (remnants of camps at the saddle were found under ash from the Mount Mazama eruption). This hike has everything. Landscape, wildlife, and a rich history. I never get tired of going up there. I have been watching your videos for a while now and I was really glad to see you got a chance to camp at Sahale.

If you see a bear on the trail and want to know what kind it is, climb a tree. If it climbs up to kill you, it is a black bear. If it pushes the tree over, then kills you, it is a grizzly bear. That was just a black bear, look big and stand your ground. Great video Thomas!

Have you researched how to act around a bear since the trip? Wildfire smoke can mess up blue skies but when it gives the sun and clouds that beautiful orange red glow, it's phenomenal. Glad you enjoyed your visit to our home state.

if bear attacks shoot it. spray? are you a woman?
@jamesdawson2393
@jamesdawson2393 4 жыл бұрын
Marc G Actually, experts tell you to avoid shooting at a bear because it’s more than likely the bear will attack you before it goes down or before you can get away. Spray is more likely to get rid of a bear without the need to kill a beautiful wild animal in its own habitat, nothing to do with gender...

Thomas, it’s again a lot of fun to see you made it on this trip up the Sahale Arm, near me, as it’s truly one of the classic hikes in the North Cascades and a place I took my first reasonably good landscape 40 years ago on Kodachrome 25, printed on direct positive paper, state-of-the-art all those years ago. I still found Glencoe, Skye and other places in Scotland at least as reliably beautiful, enough that one or two has made it to my wall - something that doesn’t often happen. Glendale on Skye? World-class. Thanks for your videos.

The North Cascades are such an incredible place! Glad you were able to come up here and see how beautiful it is! There is a rich history of landscape and natural photography in the Cascades, where many photographers and wilderness adventurers took photos to capture the beauty of these peaks, just as you did. These photos were then published and compiled, and used to persuade legislators to create Wilderness designations (Such as the Stephen Mather Wilderness where you were camped) and the North Cascades National Park designation itself. This place is truly a testament to the power of landscape and adventure photography.

Being a resident of Washington, it's nice to see your videos (and shots) of our national parks. The haze you referred to originated from forest fires to the north and to the east...not huge fires but enough to "muddy up" the skies. But you really must visit Yosemite again...my wife and I got married at Glacier Point...and the access is phenomenal. Best time to go is early spring (before schools close for spring break) when the snowpack runoff is heavy, and after they (the kids) go back to school in late August. Highly recommend the hike up Half Dome...done it a couple of times...but travel light. You can't take a bad picture!

What's truly amazing about landscape photography is the journey it takes to get the photo. There's so much that no one else sees, especially when you're alone.
