I sold my 12si some 15 years ago and went for Thiel CS1.6 as I was looking for more detail and heavier bass. My wife still hasn’t forgiven me (and I admit that midrange was to die for).

Thank you - this was very interesting to hear. The Celestion sounds much more alive and transparent …maybe colored. The flat Sound from the Spendor is boring and musty. I didn't expect it to be so clear.

Great job Kevin … they are both a treat for sure … but as a proud owner of the SL12Si for the last 30 years I must say I never got tired of them … even If I have some fun with my B&Ws from time to time … Could you please indicate the stands and cables you used with the Celestions in this video ? Thx

Hi 👋 The wires were Rocket 22 by Audio Quest. The Stands used for the SL12si were Celestion 43cm SL600si, sand and lead shot filled, they are also the correct stands for SL12si. The Spendor’s used the same wires, the stands are Heybrook 45cm open frame.

Just stumbled on this review and your channel. I'm not really in the market for any speakers ATM (my cell is a bit small...) but I really enjoyed the review and your easy natural delivery. Keep up great work. And I thought the Spendor's sounded a more natural listen!

Thanks 😊 the SP2/2 are fantastic speakers

Very nice your video. I have the same speakers: Spendor SP 2/2 and using alternatively with Mcintosh Ma6500 an Ma6100 the result is always fantastic. The bass reflex port as you can see is not symmetric. If the bass reflex ports are towards the outside the basses increases, if they are towards the interior the bass decrease ...Ciao from Italy!

Hi 👋 Nice to find someone else enjoying SP2/2. With the ports “in or out” I actually found a more coherent bass with them inside but narrowed the soundstage. Interesting, do you have the ports on the outside/wider soundstage?
@68surfboy3 жыл бұрын
@@dittonworks Yes I have the ports on the outside/wider. It seems the bass are spacious…in my room. I think it affects only in small rooms. I have the wall at 1 mt on the right and left side and probably the port wider help the bass . I really love this sound, is clear and warm and with the right music very emotional.

Nice video Kevin, I just the prefer the Splendor's , mainly due to the kick drum sound as you mention. As you say these shootouts do take up quite a bit of time setting up
@dittonworks3 жыл бұрын
@michael, yes they do take time. The SL12’s sound great but the Spendor’s are so smooth it’s hard to turn them off.

Yes, I could hear the punch of the SL12s through my Yamaha Ns1000Ms. The bass of the sp2/2s is softer.

Really depends on your listening preferences. The SL12s are more "honest" whereas the SP2/2s are the sonic rose tinted spectacles and are an "easier" listen. Either way is valid. The Celestions just about win for me, but this could switch with the right music. Great video again, thanks Kevin.
@dittonworks3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Spot on mate. I must add the SL’s will play significantly louder too. Cone materials and tweeter design are playing a massive part there. For absolute listenability, I’ve got to say the Spendor’s edge ahead on most (varied) music. The SL’s have the punch and dynamics to cope with more demanding tracks. A win for both in my opinion.
@chriswright50163 жыл бұрын
@@dittonworks as you know I'm well disposed to the Celestion sound, lol, but I do think these have an accuracy to them that's missing on the Spendors. But I concede that's a different thing to listenability. Ultimately it's good to have speakers in both camps to match the mood.

@@chriswright5016 it’s a similar debate to Valves Vs Solid State I suppose? Musicality vs Accuracy. I think these days, for me anyway, Musicality wins. Although I’ve not got Toobs 😢

From this side the Spendors sounded much better. More open less boxy sound. Physically relaxing.

Sorry about this but I find the Spendor SP2/2 rather boring so much so that I almost fell asleep, however the Celestions were fabulous. Now admittedly my speakers are several grades up on either of these, Tannoy GF Royals, but you know what those little Celestions are fabulous and, if you could find a pair, partnered with that wacky sub of theirs, looked like an Imperial fighter, you'd have a very fast and revealing system that might even nip at the heel's of my Tannoy's!!!!

You mean the system 6000, I have them. I also have the Celestion Kingston which utterly outclasses the SL12si in all Departments. Thanks for watching

SP2/2 for the win. Smooother, more balanced... an easy summer afternoon lying on a hammock. Celestion like 2 cups of caffinated coffee... crisp move along sound. Each has it's place. You might mention the upstream gear in spkr vids as they affect the sound. Thanks for posting.

Do you need to recap the crossovers?
@dittonworks3 жыл бұрын
Only time I would recap the crossovers is if they measured miles out or sounded terrible. Neither of these do. 😊
@guus0073 жыл бұрын
For the SL12si you do not need to recap the crossover. All Solen MKP capacitors are used and they do not age. But it is true that standard Solen are used and the don’t have a great reputation. I changed them to Mundorf standard caps and the sound is more giving and less recessed. Also changed to Riken resistors instead of the cement ones. I must say the Celestions units are build like a tank.
