Sphere Cutting Jig in Action!

I like the jig. I made a jig using CAD and water jet and welding and all. Its pretty cool but I just cant get it dialed in. Its a bit bulky. Then I was looking at the Carter jig but they want $426! I think I will get this one. I am a carbide guy so that looks good. Mike I wonder why the ball looks so wobbly when you put it in the cups? Is that normal?

Thanks Mike, I always enjoy watching your videos. I've been looking at jigs that turn horizontally and thinking about making a jig. This just lit up a whole new set of light bulbs in my thinking cap on making a sphere jig with a vertical rotation.

The Chefware jig looks to be very well built. Not sure if it is better than hand turning for spheres. Might be of better value when the threading jig is added.

It is still cutting back and forth across center. I think the combo design dictated coming across the top.

Hi Mike. I just received my Sphere cutting jig from Chefwarekits about two weeks ago. You needed to sharpen that HSS cutter out of the box. Craig does not sharpen them only a rough flat at the angle needed. I touched that baby up on my CBN grinder and oh yes away I went. I could tell by the sound and site of you using the HSS cutter that you had not tuned it up. I am sure the carbide is a world of difference in the cutting. But give that HSS a try again and I think you'll agree it is better with a sharp end on it. Great video as always.

You are right. The HSS cutter did indeed need sharpening. After using the carbide, I doubt if I will ever use the HSS cutter again.

Can you turn the inside to make it hollow? 1/2 of the ball.

Yes. I would do this by esentially turning two bowls with a tenon on each. Make a tenon on one rim and a matching recess on the other so you could glue them together. Than take your rough hollow sphere and mount one end in a chuck and use the jig for final shaping.

Mike Peace Woodturning I see one of these that you can hollow out 1/2 of the ball after parting it in half and leaving a tenon on both halves. I am new to turning in your eyes so I may not word my question exactly right.

Mike what is the max & min size you turn with this jig? Looks like it works well and is responsible on price. 👍🇺🇸

The instructions say 1" and 11". I have not done any at those sizes.

He answers that question toward the end of the video. There are three different positions for mounting the tool bar, which gives you a range of (IIRC) 1.5 - 11 inches in diameter.
