A visit to Jozani Forest is one of the activities you can do alone or with family while in Zanzibar. Established in the 1960s, Jozani Forest is now a protected reserve. A total of around 5,000 monkeys live here and is home to the endangered Red Colobus and Black Monkeys. Red Colobus Monkeys can only be found in Zanzibar.
The forest makes for a nice walk with its diverse woodland landscape, mangrove trees, and a variety of marine vegetation.
On the same day, you can also visit the Spice Farm in Zanzibar. It's a guided walking tour lasting about an hour where a very knowledgeable and engaging local will show you spices and fruits that they cultivate locally. Among the must sees are the Cinnamon Tree, Annato, also known as the "lipstick tree", and Nutmeg.
They sell perfumes, repellants, and soaps made from the farm too- very affordable and all-natural. At the end of the tour, you get to taste some of the fruits and buy spices in packs to take home with you!
