Spider Farmer reached out to us about sponsoring a video covering their SF2000 LED grow light. They didn’t know it, but we are planning on doing another indoor grow this winter and were looking at picking up new lights anyways. After checking out reviews online it sounded like a very solid product and we told them we would love to check it out.

www.patreon.com/thehippiegeeks As the channel has grown and changed, I have tried to respond to every single comment in a timely manner. Unfortunately, that is getting harder and harder to do as the channel has gotten more popular, especially with chains of comments and responding back and forth. The comment system on KZbin is just not set up well to handle that many comments with the time in the day that I can give to it. Introducing our Patreon page. We have had it up for a long time now, but have not really utilized it and if you had looked at it before, you would not have much of a reason to join. Well, I went thru and revamped the entire thing. I want to be able to use that platform to connect more with those that are interested in doing so, at whatever level they decide to. If you have ever wanted to chat with me directly, Patreon is going to be the best way to do so going forward. I will still be responding to all of the comments I can, but as I said in the beginning that is getting harder and harder to do. There is not a team of people running this channel, it is just me and I do the best I can =) Anyways, thanks for reading this, and I hope to see some of you over on Patreon =)

It is a great option in a 2'x4' tent, especially as a beginning grow. What I recommend though is once you can afford it, to add in an additional SF-1000 as well, it will really increase the coverage side to side. I am actually going to have a video soon covering just that situation, as compared to a single SF-2000.

Nice review. I’ve been thinking of netting 6 plants and was wondering recommendations on how much lighting I should use. I figure 6 plants netted may use up to 3x3 for each plant. Based on the comments it sounds like I would need 6 of the 2000s. Is that right? Seems like overkill
@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
How large is your grow area, and how long are you planning to be in the veg stage? With our indoor grow two winters ago we did that exact thing, but to let that single plant get big enough to fill up a 3'x3' canopy we had a very long veg time. This winter we did four plants per square, and the canopy was pretty full after 8 weeks of veg. Coverage wise, Spider Farmer lists the SF-2000 being able to cover a 2'x4' area in flower, while the SF-4000 can cover a 5'x5' in flower. Next year we re going to be doing a SF-4000 over each 3'x3' square which is a bit overkill but gives us a lot of flexibility in hanging heights and overlapping coverage.

@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
As I have mentioned before, that ignores the cost of the three year warranty that these have, and the response times I have gotten when needing to talk to someone. Anything purchased from Alibaba is sketchy at the best of times, and useless when things go wrong. I am all for a person making the right choice for their budget, and the cheap Alibaba lights can be a life saver, but there are benefits to these branded lights as well =)
@Magiktcup
@Magiktcup 4 жыл бұрын
The lights on Alibaba will not be the same as the spider farmer ones. They may look the same but will likely use cheaper leds and parts. Its half price for a reason. I got stung from a Chinese seller on amazon who sent me a fake one when i ordered a spiderfarmer . The build quality was questionable and the driver had only 2 of its 4 screws in place and one of those screws somehow broke in the first few hours i used it. I got my money back thankfully. Don't cut corners and buy a no mark brand. Your not just throwing money away, a dodgy, poorly built light in a hot humid grow room is a recipe for a fire.

Yes, plants typically want more light as flower progresses, and should be under full intensity by the end. Just be ready to back off again if the plant doesn't respond well, every plant is different and will tolerate different amounts of light.

Got any experience with the mars hydro tsl2000? i ordered mine before i found out about these ones. it does pull 300w from the wall versus the 200 these do. just wondering how you think thatll compare to one of these ones. i got it setup in my 4x3 closet and it is defenetly bright and the spectrum looks decent. the footprints perfect for my grow IMO. i dont got any soil to start another grow yet tho.
@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't used that one, but looking at the specs it appears that the Mars Hydro has 80ish more LED's, so I am not surprised that it will pull more power. It may give more light, and the rectangular shape should fit the size of your growing space better than a square one would. I would be curious how it does for you when you get the grow going =)

@@TheHippieGeeks ill keep ya posted on how it does, it fits my room perfect unlike any of my other lights ive used. i started by using my mh/hps 600w but that got real hot. then i tried using my veg tents t5 light and that was just a few inches to long for my room due to the cord sticking out the end. but this seems to keep my temps nice and cool compared to any of those.

I would worry about light falloff at the edges of the tent, I think that 2x SF1000 would probably work better, you can spread them out to get better coverage. Their specs say that a SF1000 will cover a 2'x2' area in flower, so should be good.

Which farmer should I buy for a 3x3 tent with 4 pot plants in it ?
@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
A SF2000 would probably cover a 3'x3' all right, they list is as covering 3'x4' in veg or 2'x4' in flower. You could give it go (the coverage is surprisingly great) and then if you felt like you want/need more coverage get a second one. There is really no cost savings to get an SF4000 vs a SF2000, and you would get more flexibility out of 2 separate lights. Then again, that logic also applies to the SF1000, the price of two of them is the same as a single SF2000, so you could start with one and then expand as necessary =)

I have not tried out the Mars Hydro TS1000, but looking at the specs the SF2000 has more LED's with a higher power consumption, and as such should be putting out more useful light. The rectangular form factor of the SF2000 also lends itself well to a more typical grow tent size, which tend to be rectangular.

I don't think they produce much in the way of UV light, they have a graph showing the wavelengths of light and it doesn't make it very far into the UV spectrum. I can say however that the growth under the light has been better than any of our other lights this cycle, and I won't go back to the older LED styles.

@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
You are looking for 3-5 air changes per minute, so if your 3x3 tent is 7 feet tall you want a fan that can exhaust 190-315 CFM if you won't be using a carbon filter. A filter is going to require another 20% or so CFM to overcome, so you are looking for a fan that can push 230 - 380 CFM. There are some 4" fans out there that can do that, and several 6" ones will be able to. Just search on Amazon for "4 inch inline fan combo" or "6 inch inline fan combo" and several options will pop up, just check the CFM rating of the fans included with the combo. Hope this helps =)

81 is on the warm side of what the plants are comfortable with, but not terribly high. I am going to post a link here to a really good article about the various reasons that could be happening. The main one is PH being out of the range that the plant wants for nutrient uptake, but there can be other reasons past that. Using two of the old lights would also not have been a direct comparison the other direction, as two of the old lights would have drawn 300 watts compared to the 200 watts of the Spider Farmer light. With that said, I may do exactly that in a future video, though before doing any more comparisons I would like to pick up an actual PAR meter. Honestly it is going to depend on what your budget is. The TC-1200 is an older style grow light and only pulls 135 Watts from the wall for $90. The SF-2000 is going to cost you considerably more, and pulls 200 watts from the wall but provides far more efficient and better light coverage. If you have the money, yes this will be a better light. However, there is nothing wrong with picking up the light you can afford to get started, if that is what your budget allows.

The light you use doesn't determine the number of plants you can grow, what it does is give you a footprint for a canopy. In the case of the SF-1000, you can cover an area of about 2'x2' in flower, which is what their small grow tent is. You could grow one larger plant in that space, or six smaller plants, it just depends on how many plants you want to squeeze in there and how long you want veg to last =) As for the Phlizon light, sure it can grow things =) It will not be as efficient as the SF-1000, but it is still a grow light. Or raise the bracket on the board somehow (mount bracket on bracket maybe) and mount the driver upside down? Have the driver on a hinge? Shoudnt be that hard to diy something albeit totally unnecessary cause the manufacturer should have done it. And it sucks to do it ofc cause you wanna get started.. far from a "fatal flaw" though....if you like the rest of the light over similar priced competition. It is now July 2020. Spider Farmer is advertising lights as having dimming knobs, and shipping lights that don't. They ship the ones with the dimmer knobs to the reviewers that they send free lights to. The reviewers then (understandably) back up the allegation of a dimmer knob, and customers receive old stock that has to be taken apart to adjust. ONE DAY Spider Farmer will run out of old stock being sold as new stock, and people will get what they pay for. That day is not here yet. The lights are amazing, but I don't like being lied to. The Hippie Geeks of course we all have to make due with what we can afford. But Alex’s point matters because Lux Meters heavily favor green light (since that is the color light that humans most strongly see) while dramatically under reporting red and blue light. From the demonstrations and published research I’ve seen they only report about 1/3-1/2 of the light given off by red and blue LEDs (Blurples) while they are much better at measuring light from white LEDs (like Quantum Boards). So your comparison was likely way off due to you using a sensor that is not accurate for measuring the light that plants see.

No Spyder Farmer kits then, but mine puts out 25% more light than the Spyder Farmer w/only one board(95W), a friend bought for the same price. Before this I used an old 600W HPS, magnetic ballast. I'd go back to old school HPS/MH before a Blurple light. Strange that you bought so many Blurple lights? Several kinds of lights have been released since the original Blurple LED's, yet you give the impression that this is suddenly a new kind of light? Most "factory" grows, I've seen video of, with hundreds of lights use 1000W HPS(DE usually).. They'd get the quickest return of investment from any LED product, yet most haven't changed? Forgive my rambling. But when you went from the oldest generation of LED's, Blurple, to the newest generation, I wondered what you Geeks have been "geeking" into the last ten years? That is not quite true, though I originally thought the same thing. The SF1000 has 208 LM201B LEDs, 9 Deep Red and 1 IR Chip for a total of 218 individual LEDs. The SF2000 has 576 LM201b LEDs, 28 Deep Red and 2 IR Chips for a total of 606 LEDs. If the SF2000 really was just two of the SF1000's bolted together, it would only have 436 individual LEDs ... not the 606 that it actually has. The SF4000 however does appear to actually be two of the SF2000 bolted together. I would rather go with SF2000's for flexibility, and skip over the SF1000's, though I do not have a SF1000 to really be able to make that choice with.

Ah Canadian, I have no idea what the conversions are, but looking at Amazon in the US and the current listed price is $339, with the price on the Spider Farmer website is $319. I agree, this is absolutly not a "budget" light for normal people. For someone that deals with the truely high end LED's in a professional environment then yes, this light is cheaper. When you are looking at the cheaper blurpie lights versus something like this however, it is absolutely more expensive. However you get more light out of it, at a far lower energy cost per month, so it is just a balance. Our first lights were the blurpies, as it is what we could afford at the time. I do love these lights however, and our big tent will be getting switched over completely before the next grow.

@@TheHippieGeeks im still new to growing and just placed my order for the sf 2000... I read the bluple are harmful to your eyes and they dont do as well as "real sun" type lights. Overall i wont diss the lights or spiderfarmer till ive tried them... At this point... ANYTHING is better then my current lights... (Cfl mixed with led for wider spectrum) have invested a bunch into learning to "grow pro" so im really hoping for them best!

@@TheHippieGeeks Actually for a small tent set up I would recommend the growers choice roi e420 it's a great legit entry level led for folks on a budget. But that would blow your spider farmer cheap chinese copy out of the water so let's pretend it doesn't exist. Be careful though some of your viewers will start figuring out what to look for in a light and they will start calling you out more and more.
@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Really with my last comment I was just being a flippant dick =) But are you honestly going to compare the E420 to the SF-2000? Bit of an unfair comparison as the E420 pulls 420 watts from the wall and costs $650 WITHOUT its controller. Meanwhile the SF-2000 is pulling 200 watts and costs half as much. If you want to make a much more fair comparison, that would be the bigger SF-4000, which also pulls 420 watts from the wall. Fortunately, I will have that review going live on Wednesday so you can complain about it on that video =) However, let me give you a sneak peek of the numbers. Looking around at a couple of reviews of the E420, the light levels coming out of the SF-4000 are considerably better for less money. The E420 at 18" pushes 990 PAR at its absolute best point. The SF-4000 I just tested as pushing 1180 PAR at the same distance. Comparing a smaller light to a larger light is a useless argument. You are correct, the E420 is better then the SF-2000. No one cares though, as they should not be compared against each other.
@pyramidion5911

@@TheHippieGeeks if you want a decent yield with decent quality you need at least 400 watts drawn from a modern led setup. Anything less than that and your growing larf. I said it's an entry level light and it's just at or under 1k with the controller, if you cant afford that then you should be shopping at a dispensary or down the street at bubba's house cause he put money down where it matters.

You are fucking hilarious, trying to push a $1000 investment as a budget setup that is the minimum to be able to grow anything worthwhile. You opinion is your own, but to roll up in to a random grow light video to complain that a cheaper light isn't good enough because YOU can afford a better set up is garbage. In your initial comment you said that viewers are going to call me out more and more, but when the best argument you can come up with is that a $1000 set up is better than the SF-2000 ... Well you are technically correct because it costs more then three times as much? Congratulations, you win the internet today.

These are a rip off. Sorry. They raise their prices regularly too. If you want a decent light, use Alibaba and buy an HLG clone. Dont buy these.
@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
I would disagree. With the Alibaba clones, you get a knock off product with a 1 year warranty, if you can even get that. I have had good experiences and bad experiences with Alibaba, and when it is bad ... it is really bad. The Spider Farmer comes with a full three year warranty, and I have never had an issue getting in contact with them for any reason. It just depends on the amount of risk you are willing to take when buying a product. I will never knock someone for going the affordable route, but to call these a rip off doesn't take into account all of the variables you need to look at when buying a product.

@@TheHippieGeeks fair. These are already a "budget" light, though. The price is/was the only real attraction. The reason I use "rip off" is based on their business practices of price hiking. There's been four raises in price in nearly as many months. It's over double what it originally was. These guys are greedy. They'll have to give them all away at the price they're at now because they're barely value for money. Alibaba is still a better option if you can't find HLG for whatever reason or you're not of the mind to make your own QB/COB set up. People, sponsored growers on KZbin and beyond, are returning the lights and boycotting in protest of all the hikes. Just because they were nice to you and gave you a light to advertise for them, doesn't mean they're not an underhanded bunch of opportunists.
@TheHippieGeeks
@TheHippieGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
That is the beauty of a free market, if the people disagree with the price then they will not sell, and they company will get the message. I will never tell anyone what they should buy, all I can speak to is my experience with the light and feelings on it. Also to be super up front about the fact that we were sponsored, because while I love the lights, there is no way that we could afford them on the budget we have to grow indoor. Hence the reason that all of our original lights were of the super cheap variety =)
@rm0190

@@TheHippieGeeks also fair! I wasn't implying there was anything about you to worry about. These guys are Marshydro. They don't tell you that, but they are. Looks at the owners, the distributors. Same. Mars were banned on near every grow forum and known to be a bit shit so rebranded new models as SF to get that market share back and avoid the bans on forums, social media. That's their game. Sponsored growers are commercial pawns in it. Why do you think they give everyone that asks a light and offer others what they want? It's not kindness. Anyway man, you rock. I'm the dick here, I know. But people should know what they get up to to make literally millions a year from us.
