Spider-Man PS1 but it has Achievements

You can't earn trophies in Spider-Man from PlayStation 1 but you can earn achievements! It's all thanks to a website called RetroAchievements, where achievements are coded into the game. It is very very cool and there website is like most platinum trophy hunting websites which tracks your stats. So join me as I revisit one of my favourite games of my childhood, Spider-Man. I do really wish it had a platinum trophy but I will settle for the achievements.
Disclaimer: Due to this being an old game, the audio was really hard to sort out and there is 1-2 bits in the video that are 3-4 seconds long with static, I couldn't resolve this during editing but it shouldn't ruin the video for you. There is a bit around 19 minutes 40 seconds that is a bit hard on the ears.

I have actually noticed quite a few hardcore trophy hunter friends of mine as well as a few KZbinrs have been playing a lot more RetroAchievents lately than trophy hunting. Think it’s a combo of 1) playing old classics you grew up with as well as classics you never had the chance to play before and 2) RetroAchievements often seem to give much better challenges whereas lots of modern games are just ridiculously easy to Platinum.

The delay on your web is becuase the swing has a very limited range. The "delay" was you not being in range, then being in range. You also have to be facing the building you are trying to swing to. Hope I was able to clear some confusion. These old games are clunky.

@@PlatinumBrocame here to say this. If it’s more then 2 swings it’s considered out of range most the time. That’s why if you ever notice after 2 swings you drop like crazy.

I’m here to help, the web swinging is actually responsive. The way it works is how close you are to the thing you want to swing too. Which is why you sometimes fall to your death cause the thing is to far away.

There are unlockable costumes that give you unlimited webbing or even invincibility that you can use for these achievements

Dude there was an easier way to beat carnage, simply web him once so he can do the breaking out animation. While in that animation get close to him and press kick and web at the same time to grab him. Then aim towards the sonic bubble and press kick again to push him into it. Then lastly repeatedly tap web on him while inside the bubble so he can't get out of the bubble. But i'll give you flex points on beating carnage on the web pull method (which is a way more difficult method to beat carnage btw)

@@PlatinumBro oh and on monster ock, you don't have to web swing, you can simply jump cuz the web swing always makes you land on the wall which can mess you up. Don't worry he won't pass you (unless you stop) but be right next to you cuz he was programmed with crazy rubber banding to catch up to you.

Grew up playing this, love it. I'm getting all achievements for it as well right now and man... The 10k points in zip line training is something else. Never got so stressed about an achievement in my life before (except for the Shadow of the Colossus platinum, yeah that was hell).

Some of the lists are absolutely brutal, especially some of the newer ones added for the GameCube launch, specifically Smash Bros Melee. It'd be dope to try and finish this one but I can absolutely agree with you not wanting to tarnish a childhood classic.

I recently played this, and the biggest thing that stuck out to me was how much I had to abuse the impact web as a faux-defense because it's the only attack that doesn't have a ridiculous wind-up in the animation.

Impressed you begun with Hard. I think a modern controller makes it harder to play than on the old consols. And depending on what you are used too it´s hard to go back to a slower control set. I remember getting used to all the inputs and timing on things in this game on the PC where the graphics looks better. The only problem I had was depending on the computer the game would glitch during the Police chase, Spidey is suppose to web towards the building but for some reason he dose´t and falls down and dies insted. Really annoying, when I made the computer go overworked and be slower that´s when the game worked in my favor. Similar thing when chasing Venom after you go into the building. Spidey runs out and dies before I even get control of him. So right now I would´t be able to play it on a modern computer unless I find out some glitch codes and I am just not into that.

Looks like an interesting challenge. I had heard about Retroachievements but have never really looked at it because I still have a lot of games in my backlog I want to play and platinum. I have never played this game (grew up playing PS2 games) but seeing you struggle with these unresponsive controls really makes me appreciate modern games 😂 Since I haven't really looked into RA I don't know which games might be a good challenge. As much as I liked this game as a kid, it has problems. Web-swinging is so wonky because you have to be close enough to building/wall before Spidey decides to such action. Later Spider-Man games starting from PS2 era got it right in my opinion.

@@PlatinumBro Black Cat does give you instructions about web-swinging on the first level, and tells you that when you're close enough to building to press R2. How much is "enough", she won't say it, it's up to players to figure it out. The Venom chase level truly puts your web-swing skills to test.

You show your profile at 37:53 and I noticed you were in Softcore mode. Yet you were playing like you were in Hardcore. Did you use save states or any other emulator function (outside of fast forward) at any time? Cause if you didn't, I would recommend swapping to Hardcore.

Can you use fast forward in hardcore mode? I didn’t think you can which is why I just did it in soft core. I did use some save states for when I closed the game though

@@PlatinumBro Yes, you can use fast forward in Hardcore. You can also make save states but you can't load them (Which is really useful for bug testing if the player finds a ticket). And you can use Turbo buttons. Softcore allows you to use save states, rewind, slow down, game genie codes, and anything else that would normally be considered "cheating". TASs are still banned in Softcore

Don't tell me this game was THAT difficult 0_0 I've played the hell out of it on PS1 back in the day. Yes, camera turns were... complicated at times but you could easily adapt to it. But I must say: the final chase was one of the biggest anxiety-enducing sequences I've ever played through.

According to the forums, on hard, it’s down to the millisecond so you have to be so accurate and honestly I tried about 100 times and it just seemed impossible haha

Getting 10000 points in Zip lime training, to obtain the alt costume, is absolute nonsense, its way too difficult for a skill (web zipping without touching the ground) that is not even used in the actual game.
