@SK8TER4LIFE455 жыл бұрын
I respect ur opinion but I severely disagree. I didnt think there was anywhere near the emotional weight in this scene that there should have been. I feel like people are only reacting as Spider-Man fans who have known Aunt May since they were kids rather than accurately judging her portrayal based on this actual game. We only ever see May like 4 times before she gets sick, and never for more than like 5 minutes at a time. She gives Peter some money once and im supposed to feel like her death was "tragic"? Nope sorry I cant. This game was alot of fun and the story was relatively decent, but man does it have ALOT of issues in the writing and character development department. I'd love to talk about it more tbh.
@jacobcamacho4395 жыл бұрын
@@SK8TER4LIFE45 I think you're not giving much credit to the theming of the game's narrative overall. While some characters in the game are undeveloped I am more ok with that fact since the primary focus is Spiderman as a character, which you can't deny was handled to the best of the game's ability. To say May is underdeveloped is kind of missing the point of her purpose in the overall narrative which is to act more as a symbol for a theme rather than an actual character with agency which is ultimately the point of her character which is to symbolize sacrifice. Having this scene right after the doc oc fight is probably a great writing move on the game's part because each has a similar purpose and mirror one another in a way. In both you see Spiderman's true superpower not the strength or web slinging but his willingness to sacrifice everything for the greater good, an ability he learned from both his surrogate parents, may and Doc oc. He's able to win against doc oc not because he's stronger but because he literally sacrificed his body in order to stop him in a test of willpower. His next trial tests his moral willpower by having him choose between new York or aunt May. Its at this point I realized the great irony in the writing when it comes to aunt May. All throughout the game she impresses on you the fact that if you help one life you help them all. This line sort of encompasses the entirety of the plot if you think about it. Its a nice twist on the with great power comes great responsibility theme with Spiderman learning a hard but valuable lesson that is sometimes no matter how hard you try you can't save everyone and that some people are beyond your ability to save. This is why he breaks down during the doc oc fight because he realized he wasn't seeing the nuance of this saying, since his want to help doc oc is ultimately what enabled his turn to evil, in this moment Spiderman has made a crucial mistake in his dogmatism to that saying. This is why it is ultimately Spiderman's fault for May's death since he was blind to the proper way in helping Otto by trying to do right by him by any means. While some characters may not have been utilized effectively in their own development you have to admit that they serve towards Spiderman's characterization almost perfectly which was I feel the ultimate goal of the narrative and game, to make you feel like Spiderman, hard decisions and all too.
@SK8TER4LIFE455 жыл бұрын
@@jacobcamacho439 All of that is great and all and I wont deny that those themes or ideas arent present in the game. But u are definitely giving them wayyy more credit than they deserve for the execution of these themes. Every game, movie, etc. has a theme, that doesnt mean they always execute it well. Look at it this way, if this was a completely new character that nobody has ever heard of, nobody would be claiming that May's death was an emotionally tragic event. Just like nobody says that about Jefferson Davis because nobody really knew who he was unless they were a Miles Morales fan. To alot of people he was just a guy that we recently met. No big deal. But with May its different because everyone has seen aunt May in every Spider-Man comic, show, movie, game, etc. So they are injecting their love for aunt May from every other incarnation of her into this game which isnt emotionally fair. The game itself does very little to make us care about this character and is reliant on our knowledge of who she is SUPPOSED to be in order to make her death feel impactful. I can definately disagree that this game handled Peter as best as they could. There will always be room for improvement. And frankly I found that in alot of situations Peter didnt feel like the genius he is supposed to be and they never actually deliver on the deep relationships that the late game wants to make u feel like he is supposed to have with these characters. The relationship between Peter and MJ is wayyy more developed than the one between him and Otto, or him and anyone for that matter. Peter never seems to be as starstruck and mesmerized by Otto as they wanna make u believe in the end game. Going to the lab to work with the doc always comes off as more of an afterthought that he always forgets to do rather than a genuine admiration for working with the man. Sure he mentions in a cutscene how he thinks Otto is doing great work but thats about as much as we're gunna get until the plot demands that he idolized him. He didnt even pay enough attention to Otto to realize how increasingly hostile and aggressive he's become or the fact that he keeps mentioning how he wants to surpass the limitations of humans and become something greater. These are all red flags coming from someone ur supposed to really look up to and admire, yet Peter never even acknowledges it in any way. Sure after Otto becomes Doc Oc Peter talks about how he never realized it, but thats just contradictory writing. U cant tell me he idolizes the man and then have him ignore any and all signs of his personality change just because the plot demands it. Hell, a friend of mine who doesnt know much about Spider-Man or who Doc Oc is could already tell that he was gunna be evil because of these obvious character changes and the fact that he had the raft blueprints in his lab along with other clues that my dumb friend picked up on but genius Peter Parker couldn't. There are so many things in this game that could have been great but fall flat due to bad writing or scene direction. They rush past important events that should be way more dramatic than they were. Lets take Doc Oc for example. His character development started off pretty well. He was just a scientist who wanted to help people (even though he was a "genius scientist" who couldnt get any of his stuff to work until Peter steps in to fix all his mistakes). But then his scenes become increasingly more rushed as the game progresses and it feels more and more like they are just doing things for the sake of the plot. The fact that he goes from not being able to get a robot arm to work without setting his lab on fire to making perfectly functioning mind controlled robotic tentacles that extend and retract within the span of like a week is ridiculous to me. And if u wanna argue that Peter did it by fixing all his errors then that just makes Otto seem even less like a genius scientist than he already did. Also, what was even the purpose of the "Anti-Ock suit"? Did they ever even bother to mention why Peter needed a new suit to fight Otto? They never establish that his old suit somehow wasnt able to do it and they never give a reason for why the new suit can. The suit power just refills ur gadgets and the fight is just as straight forward as all the rest: dodge, web him up, beat him down. So what the hell did that suit even do? If anything it detracted from what could have been a great moment at the end. Peter could have used the white spider suit that Otto himself designed as a symbol of what Otto used to be. He could have pointed at that logo and used it as an example of how much he admired and respected Otto and how much of an impact he had on his life. But sadly that never happends all because they wanted to be edgy and give him a new black metal suit to look badass in the final fight. Insomniac themselves had mentioned many times before the game came out that the white spider was symbolic to their story and their version of spiderman. And it very well could have been. Except they didnt even bother to use it other than the fact that Otto wrote u an email about how white is better for tactical purposes or something like that. The fact that Otto made the logo is NEVER brought up again. I can go on and on about all the things I thought this game could have done better but I think I've done enough writing for now lol. Was the game good? Yea. Was it the "deep, personal, mature and emotional journey" that so many people wanna hype it up to be? Not quite. Maybe it could have been but it just doesnt reach those heights. If u actually read through this and want to continue discussing it I'd gladly love to converse more.

@@SK8TER4LIFE45 Jeez someone be sippin that contrarianade.jk jk. But seriously I think you're making mountains out of mounds here. Expecting so much from something is just going to color your perception of something with that bias but I digress. But anyway I feel like your arguments are coming from a bit of bias. From something that by all means should be considered mindless pulp to actually attempt subtle and ambiguous theming is something that's a pleasant surprise and a great foundation to work up from. To say that the theming fails without acknowledging their intentional symbolism, reincorporation, and ambigiouty is lazy criticism and unfair for actual discussion.

Peter's reaction at 1:47 really broke my heart. This is what Peter should have done in One More Day. He sold his and the love of his life's soul to save Aunt May. Just like in this video, Aunt May would never want something like this, she would never want Peter to let Mephisto erase his marriage with Mary Jane. She would want to die and be with Ben. Fuck you Quasada. Imsoniac handled everything perfectly in this game. Gameplay, story, soundtrack, Peter and his relationship with other characters like Mary Jane and Aunt May. I actually cried when i reached this part. I still tear up now. This is hands down the best spiderman game and its not cause of gameplay but how Peter and Spiderman gets portrayed. It is what fans have read and what new comers can relate with. Villains are spectacular. I cared for Martin and Otto and actually felt VERY depressed that they were going down that path. To me a good game isnt about flashy gameplay or hyper realistic graphics. Its the connection of the characters and how it weaves itself in the plot. Insomniac dared to go where no Spider-Man storyline has gone before. The death of Aunt May symbolises the death of the Spider-Man lore as we know it. Can’t wait to see how Peter operates without May in the sequel.

I cried so hard at this whole scene... a really dark scene knowing that Peter had lost nearly everyone in his life (at least family wise), and making the heartbreaking decision to let Aunt May go so that they could cure the other infected people... The only bright part is knowing that Aunt May has been reunited with Uncle Ben 😭

Peter saves so many lives and helps so many people, and yet, his reward in the end, is to watch his loved ones suffer, Peter deserved every right to cure his Aunt May for all he has done for the city. But deep in his heart he knew what he had to do with the cure despite the cost. Peter has done so many great things for his city. And fate rewards him with nothing but pain and tragedy. It’s the saddest thing about being a hero.

For me, this scene cemented Yuri's Spider-Man as my favorite Spider-Man of all time. Yes, even greater than the comics and movies. Aunt May dying in a Spider-Man story is not anything new. The infamous One More Day scene has Aunt May die, but her death is undone. No Way Home sees Aunt May die, but there was really nothing Peter could do to save her. Here, Peter is left with a choice. Save Aunt May, or save countless people. He literally has the power to save his aunt from dying...but doing so would doom so many other people (including Captain Watanabe.) Peter himself knows this, and his "I don't know what to do..." to May breaks my heart...because it is a decision that no one should be forced to make. But hearing May tell Peter "Yes you do" gives Peter the power to do what's right, even if it breaks his heart doing it. As many have pointed out, this scene fulfills a character arc that is central to who Spider-man is: Uncle Ben died because of Peter's lack of responsibility. Peter's commitment to responsibility led to Aunt May's death. This choice did not mean he did not love Aunt May, but because he knew that if he used the cure on Aunt May: How many other people would be in his shoes this very moment? Standing beside a dying loved one? Yuri's Spider-Man embodies what makes Spider-Man great (strengths and flaws in all). And I eagerly look forward to continuing Peter's story in Spider-Man 2.

"few hours... Maybe a day." Those are vastly different estimates.
@oneangryboi4082 жыл бұрын
When you want to make a death impactful, you need to have the character impactful. The Uncle's Death was what created the Spiderman, and it was through Aunt May's death that Spiderman became a true hero to all and everyone. They didn't hold back. I just wish the trophies went like "With Great Responsibility" for visiting the Uncle's grave beforehand, then "Comes Great Power" for the Aunt's grave.

Knowing how they portrayed May, she was already selfless so even if Peter did choose to save her which I hardly doubt he would May would have just said no. May had already made the choice for peter, he just had to follw thru. This death unlike Ben's wasn't necessarily due to Peter's inaction but more due to the fact that May was part of Peter's life. Ben died because Peter failed and didn't want to stop the man who shot Ben even though he could have. Aunt May died because she was trying to help others and that unfortunately made her a target. Peter will be haunted be her death by not as much as Ben's.
