For the show, obviously, none of this applies because they completely eliminated the Young Griff/Aegon storyline. But I think the fan theories are onto something here for the books -- because he makes a strong point, that if Varys truly wants a peaceful realm, his actions are in direct contradiction, and the idea that Aegon is a Blackfyre does help explain that contradiction. There's another aspect of the books and the Golden Company that isn't in the show and wasn't addressed in the show (though the show stole part of the storyline and gave it to Jorah) -- the current leader of the Golden Company is a man named Jon Connington. Jon was a close friend of Rhaegar (and was secretly in love with him), and was named by Aerys the Mad King to be Hand of the King to help put down Robert's Rebellion -- when he couldn't contain Robert's army, Aerys stripped Connington of the title and gave it to his pyromancer, then exiled Jon. It's Jon Connington who gets greyscale saving Tyrion in the books as they travel south on the Rhoyne River to Volantis, not at the ruins of Valyria. If Jon was in love with Rhaegar, and he thinks Aegon is truly Rhaegar's heir, then either Aegon IS who they claim he is, or Ilyrio lied to Connington about Aegon actually being a Blackfyre. I personally think the latter is the case. Yeah, the books are FAR more intricate than the show...

As someone who was a book reader, I used to be 50/50 about who I thought Young Griff really was, but over time I'm leaning towards thinking that yeah this kid is a fake. I mean Aegon was supposed to have been killed in the Sack. There's way too many coincidences and conveniences to make this "we did a baby swap and saved Prince Aegon!" possible. It really is more likely that either Young Griff is a secret Blackfyre descendant or just happened to be a kid that possesses Valyrian features. In the novels, Rhaegar's and Elia's children are described. The daughter Rhaenys looks just like her mother, so she's a Dornish looking girl with dark hair and eyes, and olive skin. Baby Aegon definitely looked like a Targaryen. Also in the novels, there's mention that in Essos there are still Valyrian descended people around as Valyria was once an empire that controlled Essos. Culturally Valyria is based somewhat on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. So kind of like the Roman empire, there are people who live in various parts of Essos that might be descendants of Valyria. They tend to only marry other Valyrians for blood purity, etc. I think one of the big cities of Volantis, the upper classes are dominated by people who are proudly Valyrian in origin. While I get the reasons why they eliminated this whole thing in the TV show, I (and some book readers) kind of feel like D & D don't actually know what to do with or how to write super smart scheming characters like Varys, Littlefinger, or even Tyrion. Is it just me or do these characters feel like they're not as crafty or sharp after Season 4?

I love seeing these reactions TBR. Thank you for doing these. Watching 7 seasons of the show I think you have seen enough by now to separate out the book and show stuff. I appreciate you taking the time to understand the broader world of Game of Thrones and if you decide to read the books I think having these theories top-of-mind will give you a richer experience with the text and and overall story. Keep expanding your Song of Ice and Fire universe, you are a man of winter now...explore! *Cheers*

there was an important thing they forgot about the first blackfire rebellion. The king "legalise" his 12 bastards and gave one the ancestral sword passed down from king to king. That is why people thoght he could have a strong claim. The sword was valyrian steel. And he is arguebily stronger than barristan and arthur dayne beeing said to be fighting literally like a god (the warrior god), undefeated and beated hardly a top 15 (like jamie lannister) fighter ever. The sword was also named Blackfyre, which is where the name comes from. It belonged to Aegon the Conqueror and every king after him up to Aegon IV, and was considered just as much a symbol of Targaryen rule as the Iron Throne itself. The other ancestral Targaryen Valyrian steel sword is Dark Sister, which belonged to Visenya. It was this sword that was meant to be passed to Targaryens deemed worthy of Valyrian steel, such as Aemon the Dragonknight and Bloodraven. By not giving Blackfyre to the heir to the Iron Throne, Aegon IV put the two symbols of Targaryen power into different hands, setting the stage for a conflict still affecting the realm to the current day

It’s also important to note that the two swords whereabouts aren’t currently known. Bloodraven took Dark Sister with him to the wall, so he may still have it in his cave north of the wall to the current day. Blackfyre was last known to have been in the possession of Bittersteel during the 2nd Blackfyre Rebellion I believe. As Valyrian steel weapons, they will likely play some role in the war against the night, and anyone of Targaryen descent that comes into possession of Blackfyre has a reasonable claim to the throne

I disagree with Alt+Shift+X in that there’s more evidence for “Aegon” being Illyrio’s son than what he presented, but that’s the wonderful thing about the books - you have to pay attention to capture it all. That being said, I truly hope you decide to read the books. It would be great for someone who has never read the books, to come up with some sort of interesting and creative video series about reading them for the first time.

I think this theory is interesting, but what I'm really wishing to learn is whether young Aegon himself knows this or not. And if he doesn't, will they tell him once he sits the throne if they succeed? What will that mean for this young man, that his whole life has been a lie, that hia very identity is a lie? Maybe it's a story that would mirror Jon Snow's in interesting ways, when/if Jon learns that he is not Ned Stark's bastard, but the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, maybe even legitimate. These two young men around the same age, both learning that some of the people closest to them have lied to them their entire lives, that they aren't who they've been told, their whole sense of identity in ruins, could have interesting parallels. Maybe if Aegon learns before Jon, it might provide us with conflicting feelings about Jon learning the truth of his parentage, because we've already got a chance to see how it could affect someone.

This is a really good book theory! The show doesn't do the character Varys justice at all. I think part of the reason the show doesn't go into detail on this is because they don't want to have to explain Blackfyre rebellions and family history and they've already had to change character names in an attempt to not confuse the audience. Imagine having a character called "Young Griff" who may be the older son of Rhaegar and then you have Jon Snow, the younger son of Rhaegar. And then try to tell the audience that Rhaegar named them both "Aegon." I think everyone would be scratching their heads in confusion lol
