Hey Apprenti-Squad! In today's video let's talk spiderman faceshells. Do you actually need a faceshell for your spiderman cosplay? In this video I'll tell you my thoughts on it and my reasons why-- as well as share a secret with you that no one else is talking about that will help you cosplay spiderman like a boss!
Get your Pattern: www.etsy.com/listing/91649199...
Get WTF (What The Foam) - amzn.to/2WoFEVT
Buy Our Other Products Here:
Foam-Mo - amzn.to/33uLx5K
Cosplay Patterns - www.cosplayapprentice.com/pat...
Faceshells are basically a must for any spandex super hero like spiderman or deadpool but they can be quite pricey. If you google spiderman faceshells you will see many options and a variety of materials but they seem to start around $50 bucks and go up from there. If you want a nice one from TJackFX or Zentai Zone you can even end up spending up to $120 or more. I didn't want to pay these prices so I decided to figure out how to make my own spiderman faceshell out of EVA foam cheap and easy so that I could look legit in my spiderman cosplay but still have some money in my pockets.
My faceshell worked better than I even imagined and so I wanted to share with you how I did it and I made my pattern available on my website to help you save time too!
This mask comes out to around $9 in actual cost.
Here's the cost breakdown:
(Pack of 7) 4mm WTF EVA foam sheets - $37.77
It only takes one sheet to make - $37.77 divided by 7 = $5.40
Add the cost of my pattern to make life easy - $3.99
$5.40 + $3.99 = $9.39
Please let me know if you have any questions down in the Comments and I am happy to help you out! :)

I would prefer without a face shell because I don’t think the characters actually wear one under the masks in the comics. Comic book art generally simplifies a lot of details (like the way the nose and mouth looks through a mask like Spidey’s or Deadpool’s), so that’s why the characters have really sharp side profiles.

The characters definitely don’t wear them - but, unfortunately, we are not drawn, and stretchy material behaves weirdly, so you definitely need to wear one to get the right look. There’s really no way around it

@The_D0C70R
@The_D0C70R 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bryant721Yeah, I love the look with the mask rolled up so the mouth is exposed. Also it’s easier to take off the mask if there’s no shell. I actually bought a mask and it works just fine without a shell. The only trouble is that when I try to roll it up, the eyes don’t stay in the right spot. Edit: I figured out how to get the eyes to stay in the right spot. You just roll up the mask a certain way, so that the rolled up part holds the rest down by pinching it against your nose. It's a little difficult at first but I have it down to a science now.

I think you just really gotta get the the measurements right for the mask. I find they're not super noticeable for my suits, but I know some people have ones that are basically like full on helmets and that usually works too, Andrew Garfield's was that way as I recall for the second of his films.

1. What do we heat the foam with? 2. What temperature (if it's a tool)? 3. For how long do we heat it?
@SamMaddie2
@SamMaddie2 2 жыл бұрын
1. I would assume a heat gun, as it's a fairly standard tool among cosplayers. (A blowdryer might work too in a pinch.) 2. Most heat guns I've seen (and blowdryers too for that matter) only have one or two heat settings, so try one and if it doesn't work, try the other. 3. Only for as long as it takes for the foam to get soft enough to bend (usually only a few seconds). It should then rapidly harden again as it returns to room temperature.
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 2 жыл бұрын
I have another video that goes through the whole build process for the face shell and other foam build as well that should help :) you'll definitely want a heat gun. :). The temp will vary based on the type of foam you use but if it is just a 2 setting option, I usually use high. Hope that helps :)

So it ends up being $40 to make this foam one and have all this foam that you're not super likely to use. Why not just spend the ten extra bucks to get a higher quality plastic one? Maybe it's just me
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 2 жыл бұрын
I you don't plan to make anything else like web shooters, or lens frames or any other costume projects that you can use the foam for then you're completely right, it doesn't make as much sense financially and you should probably go a different route that makes more sense for you. :). Though from my experience, most people when they discover how easy it is to make stuff out of this foam they catch the bug and start making more things with it. :)

the benefit of a faceshell for me is that i don’t have to constantly adjust a mask between pictures; which i know is why they use them i films- once your lenses are seated where you want them? you don’t have to worry about it moving forward. I don’t think they’re necessary, but they definitely help when it comes to looking good for the pictures!

alternative option that's cheaper, plastic canvas, like what's used for crochet or rug hooking. it can be cut and heat-formed like thermoplastics, and for assembling pieces together you can use a combination of stitching the pieces with twine and then reinforcing it with hot glue. plus, because it's already a mesh it doesn't impede airflow at all. if you need extra durability, you can also layer up pieces of it.

I just got a cheap but nice looking Spider-Man costume for Halloween, and I have a half mask from my cycling days and a few other head gear things that I think I’m going to use as a make shift face shell, mostly because the mask and suit dont connect well so I can use the black fabric to sort of bridge the gap, i think because I’m too tall for the suit, and the mask slides around a lot causing me to go blind so I figure the extra material will help to keep it in place, I wish I had some spare cash to get shoes attached too… I saw a tutorial where a guy took water shoes and glued them to the suit and I thought it was genius

I personally really dislike the look of faceshells. Makes everyone's faces look too fake and uniform, which negates the idea of a person wearing a mask. Obviously everyone should do what they want at the end of the day, but I've tried face shells (for cosplay, cosplay photos, and when I work as Spidey for Marvel Live) and just never liked how they look. So I never use them.

Wearing a mask is to conceal your identity, so it actually makes it even harder to identify you…so I fail to see how it negates the idea of wearing a mask. Or are you saying it looks more like a small helmet to you or something?
@SteveRudzinski
@SteveRudzinski 2 жыл бұрын
@@mad-dash6448 I'm saying it looks like a Spider-man toy cosplay as opposed to Spider-Man himself. Your argument that faceshells are for hiding identity would be fair if Peter EVER wore a face shell in any comic, movie, or cartoon. But he doesn't, it's just a fabric mask over his face. So unless you in real life have a really genuine focus on nobody knowing who you are while in cosplay, which is fine, face shells have nothing to do with hiding one's identity and just is about having a uniform face structure. Which is fine, as I said in my first post, but I hate how it looks. Because it looks like an action figure with a sculpted head, not a person wearing a fabric mask.

It’s not too big, it’s not too small, it’s just the right rigid-ness to work fine alone. I also have a bit of a round nose tip with a convex bridge. So yeah, the only thing keeping me from wearing my Spider-Man mask all the time is my long ass hair, mustache, beard and eczema lol.

In this video, your main camera and side camera are shooting two different frame rates. I can tell because you finalized and uploaded the video at 30fps, so whenever it switches to the side cam, the framerate of it shows through. IMO, just set all your cameras to 30fps. It looks better for this kind of content, anyway. 30fps, and even better, specifically set a 1/50th of a second shutter speed and use "shutter priority mode" for the auto exposure so it can't change the shutter speed, which will directly affect how much motion blur the video has, and by extension, how natural it looks. Also, if your camera has an all-intra-frame codec mode (XAVC S-I, not S or HS for Sony, or All-i instead of ipb for Canon), or in Apple ProRes, that's even better. Yes, the file size will be bigger, but the accuracy and smoothness of motion, even WITHIN any given frame rate preference, will be improved. Lastly, make sure that whatever your camera is shooting, your editing timeline is either exactly matched to it, you format the footage to the timeline some way (IE, interpreting it for slow motion, as an example), or you re-encode the raw footage to match whatever timeline you want to use. IE if your camera says 24, it might be shooting 23.976, and if you do nothing to adjust or match it to a true 24 editing timeline, there may be some motion artifacts that look like what a CD skipping sounds like. And if you have the choice, shooting and editing in a true framerate is a little better for youtube's systems than a decimal frame rate. Sadly, from all of my research, it seems the only way to get true 30fps would be to re-encode raw 29.97 footage from a camera into true 30. But that's a simple 15-ish minute operation for a program called Shutter Encoder, and even THAT amount of time is for a 9GB, 2-1/2 hour video.

Whoops, nice catch, I must have missed one of the settings when I was setting up the different cameras and ended up with different frame rates. Thanks for the tips :)

As a glasses wearing individual, without contacts is there a way around just going blind and still being to wear a mask or face shield without having glasses smushed to your face or it showing clearly through your mask that you wear them?

I totally feel you there, over got glasses and I don't do well with contacts. Unfortunately, I don't have a good alternative to recommend for a spidey costume, I usually either go no glasses and everything is blurry or I get a pair of inexpensive contacts and where the just for the con

I cosplayed the furry equivalent of anime characters: animegao. Skintone zentai/full bodysuit and face shell/helmet could look creepy to adults but not for animated shows fans/kids. Hot if no holes for the wig top.

I'm 2 years late but if ever you don't have a heat gun, you can do it on cereal box cardboard then use paper maché to make it sturdy. Personally, it took more time but that's the alternative to being broke 🤷‍♂️. Besides, you get to eat cereal.
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice Жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah, that is definitely an option to do as well. :). You can get a heat gun for like $8 at harbor freight though and it is definitely worth the investment to save yourself some time. :) But I like cereal too so I see the appeal of this option as well. :)

Honestly one of the easiest ways to get a really cheap face shell is to just buy one of those toy plastic Spider-Man masks you find at Walmart , since they have the shape of Spider-Man’s face there the perfect cheap way to get a face shell

@@CosplayApprentice I did use a 3d software along with pepakura to create the template but I didn't made the 3d model entirely myself, I really want to design my own models but I can't since I don't own a computer to work on, I'm just borrowing my friend's laptop. Why not use a rubber one and glue it inside the mask? I mean it still keeps it's shape and it'd be super flexible.
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 2 жыл бұрын
Rubber is pretty hard to glue to things, and you would have to figure out how to make a mold and cat it in rubber or purchase one that's already made which could get pricey. :)
