One key to remember. The job of the magician is ensure the trick goes right and he especially doesn't get hurt. Three ways of knowing or preventing that from happening. 1. Listen for replacing of nail so like the other person said you'd hear them doing it. 2. Based on your instructions can prevent them getting the idea to lift it. 3. Even that was to happen, it would wise to have a counterpart in the crowd that can signal you if the cup was changed.

There's a different way of doing it. I saw a magician do it where the spectator mixed the cups without anybody seeing then the spectator looks away and the magician mixes the cups. Then the spectator makes the choices when he genuinely doesn't know where the spike is.

Saw a guy on ted talks do this while he was blind folded, the cups were moved by the regular person without the magician looking, then the magician moved them without the regular knowing, then the magician put on a blind fold and the cups were moved a final time. the trick was performed flawlessly

Wait I understand that you can know the cup that has the nail underneath it because of the serial number, but if you let the spectator pick the cups you crush with your hand after you mix them up, what's preventing them from accidentally picking the cup with the nail underneath it?

A more important aspect is how you choose the cups to crush. There is a method for asking the mark which cup to choose so you can crush the non-nail cup. That is not shown in this video.

very nasty trick, some people are not that stupid and can take out the nail and put it into another cup while you are turned away.. now that's when you will get hurt, because the serial number you memorized is not the right one anymore.....

I've seen Keith Barry do this trick but he looked away before the person put the cups on then he mixed them up then the person mixed them up again. then Keith put on a blind fold and had the person pick which cups to smash. How would he do that?

YOU place the spike in the cup, because its styrofoam-you can hear if they try to switch the spike----its secure. You could also let them pick the cups and you DISCREETLY nail nick the cup which has the spike.

well, thats only 1 way to do it. the magicians i see get the spectator to choose which cups the magician will crush. & i've seen an egg placed in a paper bag, & the spectator will select. so how is that done? (i want to do this for the kids in my hospital)

it appears he knew where the spike was from the very start (after she mixed them). I would say a battery operated electromagnet, connected to a vibration motor would most likely vibrate when sleeve is near metal spike.
