Many years ago, i was pushing my semi through the mid-west listening to Peter Schickele, on Schickele Mix, on NPR, and he credited Spike Jones with inventing "Firehouse Jazz". This song is one of the reasons he cited . I grew up in the fifties listening to the 78's my parents had, and the band and your Dad have been a favorite of mine ever since. Best wishes to everybody, and many, many thanks.

What a great piece of music, it should go down in musical history, Both George and Spike were loving it. The handshake at the end said it all, it was genuine as the look on their faces told, indeed it did all through the number. The bullet holes in the walls added to Georges wearing of the Foreign Legion rig. Two of the greatest together, LEGENDARY STUFF!!!!!!

eclemensen I think the days of a ‘“residency” are over more’s the pity, although my cousin in Norwich seems to be doing quite well with his More Madness tribute band. Bands who write and play their own stuff are practically non existent here in the North West. Love Jazz and Blues, hope things get better for you. This virus is going to kill live gigs for a while.

Thanks for subscribing. More clips coming this week.
I've got tons of Spike's records and one of junior's records, too. "Demolition Disco", on Chinchilla Records. The first Spike record I ever had was 2 of the 3 45's from The Nutcracker Suite set. I got them at my uncle's thrift store in the late `60's or very early `70's (I got The McCoys album, "Human Ball" at the same time and that came out in `68, but this one was VERY used, so, I seriously doubt it was 1968) and never got the first record in the set until about 15 or 20 years ago! I remember the first time I ever heard of Spike or heard one of his records, I was VERY sick, about 6 or 7 years old and lying on the couch fighting for just a breath of air...I was having my second bout with pneumonia. I don't remember what time of the year it was, but, they were televising what I think was the first manned rocket into orbit and they announced on t.v. that the favourite song of one of the astronauts on board was, "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth", and they played it on the air. I think the astronaut was listening to it, too and, what they broadcast on the t.v. was a black screen with just the jagged lines of the sound waves of the record playing going across the screen. I'd never seen anything liked that before, so, to me, it was a bit scary. My parents asked me if I knew who that was, and I didn't, so, they told me it was Spike Jones. I don't think I actually started collecting any of his records until the mid `70s after I saw Rip Taylor mime two of Spike's songs, but, having never heard them before, either, I thought Rip was actually performing those songs, "Laura" and "Cocktails For Two". I found out that was actually Spike Jones and started collecting his records. I even have an albums worth of Spike Jones' Other Orchestra.

My favorite George Rock moment is the beautiful solo he plays in "Leibestraume" - over a caliope of all things, it comes right after the song is interrupted by "twinkle twinkle". It may be about my favorite trumpet solo of all time, the caliope is unheard of. I used to play the song over and over on our old nail-needle Webcor mono record player. Now digitally I can play it any time I want to. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIi4iGylZc5jnc0 - the master of slap tongueing and razzing the trumpet and staying perfectly in tune (when he wanted to) and still remaining... beautiful.
