This is my favourite of Spike Lee's movies, and is more relevant than ever.

Still my favorite spike movie. Criminally underseen- undervalued- underawarded and practically lost to history. Just like the minstrel era which basically never ended.

New Line Cinema didn’t promote it at all, and the film was barely noticed when released. This is what satire should be;; audacious, funny, sharp and uncomfortable. Criterion released It on disc last year and the picture looks looks and sounds incredible!

This is the first time I have heard of it, so thank you for this comment. I am dumbfound that a Spike Lee movie was shelved regardless of the sensitive subject, even though sensitive in 2000 is nowhere near sensitive today. To give a point of reference, the Chappelle Show first aired in 2003. I have not seen Bamboozled, but I cannot imagine why it didn't get promoted. Now I have to see it. Cheers!

@@lerm2866 I have the Blu Ray criterion. Haven't watched it yet. My favorite people in the film we're Tommy Davidson and Paul Mooney. Then Michael rapapport and Jada pinkett.

@@nebraskawaters8791 the movie is conscious of how offensive the images are inherently percieved and it is handled sensitively. Don't cheat yourself- find it and give it a chance.

Agree 💯. This is seriously a gem of movie. Spike deserves so much more love than he has ever received from the Hollywood establishment. For him not to be in the convo for best director/producer of all time is insane!

Had this movie as a kid an subconsciously it effected the way I go about carrying myself in the world. As an adult looking back at the movie, spike lee gave half of the explanation even tho it’s his movie an his vision. Probably cause of time constraints. Not only does it depict the racist, dehumanizing effects of minstrelsy that some of us did to make a living but going back 50-60 years prior to the mid-late 19th century that the minstrel show was the biggest entertainment in the country performed by white in blackface to demean, mock an denigrate our image. An they ate it up, just like today the biggest consumers of black culture is white people, but they pay for minstrels shows that’s why dysfunction sells the way it does. The subtext is proving all the myths created by them that were lies true. Even tho white supremacy created the conditions for our disposition to persist in the first place. It’s fucked up sn fucked me up to the point where honestly until now even I do not let white people see me enjoy myself in any capacity my joy is reserved for self an my people because of this movie. I know the fucked up way they view us an while idc now as an adult I still won’t give them that because of how they fetishized us.

With all the hell black America is still catching today at the hands of a so-called more progressive generation of white people, it is clear that the race problem was never lost to history.

The directors commentary on this is so enlightening. Lets you watch it in a totally different way; in fact I think I preferred the film with him talking through the entire thing like a car owner pulling along side you and explaining all the details as you gawk at their sick ride.
