I had the good fortune to meet this man when he came to Hobart many years ago. I was in Primary school at the time and I was an avid watcher of of his comedy sketches on TV and to meet him in person was an absolute honour. My cousin surprised me with a trip to the theatre - I thought I was helping him out a the Police Disco! Next thing I knew he said "righto - we need to head up the street." and up to the theatre we went and committed the cardinal idiocy of sitting in the front row of the theatre (centre stage no less) and turning up late. As I walked open-mouthed down the centre aisle, Spike turned to us and roared, "And what's your excuse?!" - this still ranks up there as one of them most amazing experiences of my life. To my young mind it was like coming face to face with God.

Indeed, Spike was a brilliant man. He’s not around to say, so I will respectfully counter your remark by pointing out that as an intelligent man, he might have been upset about the way some people call others whiney snowflakes to make up for their lack of human sensitivity and understanding. And he might have been upset about someone saying it in his name. That’s possible too.

@@featherbrain7147 Nope that's not what I was saying at all. I was just responding that Mr Milligan may not have agreed that what we have today is "whining snowflakes". The post asked what he would have made of it. I was adding the possibility that he may not agree with using the term "whining snowflakes" to society generally. Because I wonder whether actually he wouldn't have looked at society in such a cynical way. [Edit] Cynical being looking at the world without understanding or sensitivity. I should have just used the word cynical in the first place! Ha! No sermon. Just a response and opinion. I'm all for take the wee out of ourselves. Let there be more of it!!! 😛😛😛 Thank you for replying to my post.

Our book about 35LAA's sojourn in the Far East with their Japanese captors is progressing slowly. The humour was legendary. Dave Allen was a great Irish comedian . He had a missing finger. Spike loved "taking the mickey" when he could hence his reference to Dave. Dave would sit in front of the tv camera with a cigarette and glass of scotch and tell his tales of mirth. I suggest you do a GOOGLE search under "Dave Allen comedian". He had a long running tv series on the BBC. It's available on DVD. We can even buy it in Australia! Dave passed away a few years back. He came to Australia in the 70's

Some valid points, but you have to remember that this was all at a time before political correctness went crazy and racial stereotypes were acceptable comedy targets - being Scottish, I'm all too familiar with those in English comedy ;-) I suppose the trick is to take it at face value - it's easy to forget just how censored the media is these days. There's something wrong when we are unable to laugh at ourselves...

I have loved Spike from my childhood in the 50 when he was with his other crazy partners in Humour, Harry Secome, Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine. All great artists and comedians in their own right. Spike was a tormented soul fighting Manic Depression most of his life. A trait that haunts most great artists. Reading the comments below. The amount of Irish respondents shows how totally un-offended we Irish are at the “Micky” taking of Spike Milligan. The Irish are great at laughing at themselves. I wonder what the Social Justice Warriors make of Spikes Humour, because nothing but nothing, was taboo to him. He even called his friend a “Grovelling Bastard”. His friend in this case was no other than Prince Charles who only laughed at the comment and continued to love the man.

Milligan was born in India and raised in England by an Irish Dad and English Mum. He was adopted by us when the brits failed to issue him with a replacement passport in a time of need. He was buried neath the tri-colour, and his headstone bears the gaelic inscription: "Duirt me leat go raibh me breoite" which translated into English reads: "I told you I was sick". He may not have been born here but he is definitely one of ours and we love him. Ye can take Bono instead.
