As much as I love Spike, Gene wins. He's just better equipped. The Caster Gun, primarily, but also he has light shields that can help out with defense at close range, and his knife isn't to be taken lightly either. He's also just as much of an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant as Spike, maybe a shade less skilled, but Spike just doesn't have an answer for the Caster Gun.

Gene is a pretty solid fighter, but his main edge is he is a top notch marksman like Spike and has his Caster Gun, which shoots magic. One shot is all it'll take to kill Spike.

Yeah, but that's assuming that at first Gene will take Spike seriously enough to use his Caster Gun, if he doesn't and Spike is able to make it a close range combat fight, Spike might actually beat Gene as hand-to-hand combat is something that Spike is shown to be slightly more effectient at than Gene! As a marksman using regular guns I can see it going either way, if Spike gets into close range and Gene is caught off guard Spike has the edge, as it's true that Gene could still take back his advantage by using light shields, though it's not typically his way unless absolutely necessary, like when he was up against Twilight Sazuka. One thing is clear though, as soon as Gene uses his Caster Gun it's all over for Spike!

That match up would be to one sided if it happened. Spike has more experience, but Gene literally fights space pirates that use magic... Also his weapon has the ability to fire a mini black hole... So if he just shoots that in Spike's general direction he is dead...

I wouldn't say he's bad at close combat though. I definitely think Spike is the better martial artist, but Gene is really crafty in battle, even in close combat. He's used energy shields in close combat to deflect weapons. That black hole he fires can be shot at close range with no risk of himself getting pulled into it. I don't see Spike winning that battle. Gene might get more of his lifeforce stolen from firing certain caster bullets, but it won't kill him.

god im late to the party but in the ships stuff the outlaw star can ride either waves which are essentially super dense particle waves as hot as the sun, but the outlaw star also survives taking a gravity missile to its engine and is mostly intact and also took a missile that destroyed its dock, a giant asteroid, with zero damage. its also fast enough to travel a solar system without using his warp drive in under a day and can travel between systems in under a week.

Gene has the edge because of technology. He also is a great shot, just like Spike. In the first episode he does a bullet between the eyes a few different times. Not only does he have the Caster Gun, but the Light Shield, and a plethora of other weapons showcased in different episodes.

Tao magic and ley lines can counteract the caster which I believe spike learns or knows about in some episodes. Caster shells are also ancient relics in limited supply and cost a lot. The special shells have to be made by priests on the hot spring planet and cost life force to use because not enough Mana exist for such high level spells. Spike is also capable of finding his own caster gun and getting his ship modified. Gene wins though he gets the girl and gives up the galatic ley line to continue someone else's journey.

Also the Xgp was built to survive the trip to the galactic ley line it survived under water battle against giant monsters, road on a space storm wave, and other feats. It also achieves warp without gates unlike cowboy Bebop.

Spike only wins in hand to hand combat...MAYBE in a gun fight, but that would depend on a lot of different factors. The Outlaw Star takes the Swordfish unless you consider that in a death battle, Gene would have to pilot it without Melfina or the rest of the crew 🤔
