I was very much in love with Angel as a teenager, but as an adult, I respect Spike more. When Liam became a vampire and when Angel lost his soul, not a single ounce of empathy or love was carried over into Angelus. Angelus was a completely different person, which is typical for vampires, but there was something about Spike that even the demonic entity that was his vampire self couldn't squash his ability to love or feel empathy. It didn't stop him from feeling empathy for Dawn and Buffy when they lost their mother. It didn't stop him from grieving Joyce. He still had a heart left that could be broken. Angelus would have never willingly fought to restore his own soul, but Spike did. Spike restored his own soul because he didn't want to hurt his soulless self to hurt Buffy again.
