When the snow heats up it turns into water that's what the ctype is you can see this by pressing d and hovering over snow(note this only work for specific elements) when you change the ctype to sing that means the snow will turn into sing when heated up. SIng has a unique thing it can do if it's tmp, not temp equals 0 or higher it will explode, and when snow or any other element that changes into it's ctype it will keep its attributes like the tmp of it. tl;dr snow melts turns into sing and that sing explodes.

The chemistry behind this: I do believe that when exposed to high enough temperatures the hydrogen and oxygen molecules separate from water (H20 which is 2 oxygen molecules and 1 hydrogen molecule I think). Snow is made of water. This would be why an explosion could happen realistically from that.

From a physics standpoint, colloids (as they currently exist) would actually make TERRIBLE armor and, in fact, the most effective armor solution would be something that, essentially, acts like a colloid in reverse (softening on impact to slow down whatever it is that it's trying to stop). That's (more or less) how modern armor (kevlar) and defensive solutions (those dirt filled walls used by the army) work. ;)

You set the snow's temperature high enough to separate the hydrogen and o2 atoms. That means you basically took water and turned it directly into extremely volatile fuel, and heated it past combustion point instantly or very quickly. That is why you are not supposed to use water to extinguish magnesium fires- it's the same problem. I don't know what SING is that people keep talking about, but I never learned about that when dealing with magnesium fires. (Something from the game maybe, to simulate this property? I have genuinely no idea.) This is why for many years it was common practice on aircraft carriers to throw a burning aircraft off the side- trying to extinguish it was extremely dangerous, so just letting the vast ocean dampen the explosions was the best way.
