I will never understand people wanting to go "off script"" when their spouse gives them a list of things they want. It's such a blessing to have someone be so upfront with you, ignoring them is basically shutting them down. Maybe you want to be some sort of perfect partner who knows them so well you can buy the perfect gift, but that's just to make you feel better. And nobody can ever truly know a person, not even themselves, so it's way better to just listen to them and pick from the list. You can always make the packaging something cool and fun

My husband and I have a rule: no practical gifts unless expressly requested. No one wants an iron or something for Christmas. He likes me to give him a list that is large enough that he can pick a few things so it is still a surprise and thoughtful.

First thing I thought was Eugene saying "I'm sorry... Hi Betsy!" in the "Eugene ranks the cheapest wines" video lmaooooooooo Anyway, I loved Betsy and now I know where Matt got that classy vibe he has. Something that surely Eugene sometimes lacks (especially when it comes to his gross jokes lmao), so I feel her when she says that they are complete opposite... But you know, even through a screen we can see they work so well together as a couple, so imho that's a blessing lol Btw I love your podcast, everybody! It's always so genuinely interesting. Sending love to each one of you

It’s so neat to see someone’s parents and realize, oh so the bone structure comes from mom and oh, everyone’s on dad’s side has the same ears. I remember the first family dinner with my now husband and looking over and seeing the same profile in quadruple with his dad and uncles. The way genes are passed down is so interesting.

Important message for the Gift Girlfriend-it sounds like to me she feels the same way about gifts as I do which is that I don't like Stuff. Pins are just nice to look at, a Fandom necklace is just nice to look at. I prefer to get and give gifts that DO have a utility and purpose, even a fun one like board games or an expensive bra you'd never buy yourself. I think directing the conversation into what makes you happy to give and why helps. It helped my relationship bc my partner does like Stuff only meant for admiring. Hope that makes sense!

Re: The gift giving advice. I try to supply a general list for gift ideas that still let the giver be creative within a parameter that they know I'll enjoy. Like instead of saying "This specific thing" or "This specific brand of X" I'll be like "yarn or fiber/crafting supplies" or "take me antiquing" (I am not an old lady, I swear!) that way they know the genre of a thing I'm interested in and can still put thought into their gift.

Im interested in discussing Ariel’s hip hop comment at 15:00 in a racial context. Black horse jockeys used to be prominent before being barred from riding so that in turn means Black music was also excluded from the sport so I feel like hip hop should be welcomed in this context

The whole gift conversation made me a little sad. When I hear someone say that buying off someone's gift list is "cheating", what I hear is, "I'd rather engage in some imaginary competition with myself, than be 100% sure this person wants the gift I get them". I'm not saying they consciously realize they're doing that, but it's still what they're doing.
@ttaylor3294

I like being gifted items I want that I can tell the person giving me the gift CHOSE this certain one. I think it’s sad that people expect perfection when a gift should be at least a little personal… just have them give you money if you want specifics
@lucy_zey
@lucy_zey 2 жыл бұрын
They probably just have a different insight in terms of gifting. They can view gifting as an tangible representation of connection of the first person and the second person, not only considering the person that will receive. Or imparting a tangible "part" of the giver, so that the receiver would be reminded of a certain moment with or characteristic of the giver. Of course, this does not mean that this should be applied every gift giving especially with a long-term partner or family.

I agree. When I give a gift, I prefer that the person who receives it actually wants the thing.

I completely disagree with Ariel - I would tell a partner that I didn’t like a gift, especially when there’s a list available that they chose not to use. To me, going off list repeatedly shows that my partner isn’t listening to what I have to say, and that’s a big thing for me. Plus, I don’t think many people realize how rare it is to find a perfect gift that’s not on someone’s list - for every success there’s 1000 failures. There’s a much better success rate using the list.

One thought about gift giving from lists… (and this is just a general observation/point of view, not any kind of conclusion about any specific people-mentioned in this episode or otherwise) I understand people don’t always want to go off the list, and sometimes that’s fine. Sometimes it’s even nice and thoughtful, especially if they get you something you would want but may not feel confident asking for directly for whatever reason. Or something they know you would love, but you didn’t even know that thing existed; etc. And that is awesome and thoughtful and wonderful! But sometimes, especially with certain people, them not wanting to use your list feels like it’s more about them than you. Like the pride they get from being able to guess something that you would like is more important to them than ACTUALLY getting you something you’d like. And then there is this expectation and pressure for you to love that gift, or else they will feel bad or deficient in some way. So then you feel responsible for protecting their ego. And now they have made YOUR birthday gift all about them and their ego.. So if that is why said person doesn’t want to go off your gift list, then they need to get over themselves and just use the list, because your gift should be about showing love to you, not them showing off.
